The 49-year-old blew up social media on Tuesday, March 30, when he showed off a new gapless smile but with April Fools’ Day so close, not everyone was convinced the change was permanent.

"I know a lot of you are wondering, 'oh, it's gotta be April Fool's joke, he's gotta be joking with the teeth,'" Strahan said in an Instagram video on Thursday, April 1, and wore a mask to hide the big reveal.

"I appreciate all the comments. I was surprised, to be honest with you, at how many people were like, 'No! Don’t get rid of the gap, it’s your signature!' And I've always kind of looked at it that way, but I didn't know so many people cared." he said. "I appreciate all the love for the gap," he said, adding that he's had it for "nearly 50 years."

Then, he successfully pulled off his prank. "C’mon man! The gap is here to stay. Not going anywhere anytime soon... My mama likes it," he said when he pulled down the mask to reveal his smile.

Strahan pulled off the prank with the help of Dr. Lee Gause, from Smile Design Manhattan, who fitted a prosthetic. "If I go home and say I’m gonna do it it’ll be 'don’t do it,' if I post it’ll be 'don’t do it,' if I talk to my friends it’ll be 'don’t do it,' if I talk to my business partner it’ll be 'don’t do it,' but I gotta do what I wanna do for myself," Strahan told Dr. Lee in the original video.

Fans were also skeptical when Strahan posted some love for his famous smile only days before he seemed to change it. "I rock my gap with pride! It’s who I am!" the former NFL star tweeted on Tuesday, March 23, and it looks like they were right.
