Nancy Mace Claims Tattoos Were Not Inspired by Donald Trump

After revealing her iarm sleeves, outgoing South Carolina Republican Rep. Nancy Mace clarified in an interview with NewsNation that her ink reflects her personal journey and free speech, directly refuting public speculation that they were targeted at or inspired by President Donald Trump.

Mace explained that she got the tattoos in rapid succession between late 2023 and early 2024 during an incredibly difficult period of personal and professional trauma, including a breakup with her fiancé and a massive exodus of her congressional staff.

She said the body art was a way to "reclaim" her body and identity.

Her visible tattoos include floral designs, an owl, a sailboat, a Christ-like figure, the word "Justice" and a quote from a Virginia Woolf novel ("Mrs. Dalloway said she would buy the flowers herself.")

None of the known artwork is related to Trump; however, Mace has sparked intense online discussion after revealing a tattoo featuring the famous opening line from Mrs. Dalloway.

The ink has been widely dubbed an "accidental lesbian tattoo" by internet users and media outlets like GO Magazine because the novel prominently explores themes of queerness and sapphic desire. Critics have pointed out the stark irony of a conservative Republican politician — who has heavily campaigned on anti-LGBTQ+ and anti-trans legislation — permanently marking her body with a canonical piece of queer literature.

While he does not inspire the tattoos, Trump did previously comment on her body art. Reports resurfaced that he once referred to her ink as "freaky tattoos" during a private meeting with South Carolina politicians.

“I’ve always supported the president’s policies,” Mace told NewsNation. “He’s not always supported mine. And that’s his decision.”

Mace broke with Trump over two major political flashpoints: first immediately following the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, and more permanently in late 2025 over the Jeffrey Epstein investigation.

“We agree and disagree. That is the beauty of debate. That’s the beauty of democracy. That’s the beauty of the First Amendment and free speech,” Mace said. “Even if he agrees or disagrees with me on an issue like the Epstein files, I’m always going to be true to my values, which are true to the values of the constituents in the state that I serve.”

Right after the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, the freshman congresswoman publicly broke away from Trump. She famously stated Trump's "entire legacy" was "wiped out" by the siege and begged him to condemn the violence.

Following fierce backlash from the MAGA base and a redrawn congressional district, Mace worked hard to win back Trump's favor.

Despite Trump endorsing a primary challenger against her in 2022, she ultimately aligned with him again, defending his legal indictments and endorsing his 2024 presidential campaign.

The definitive, career-altering split occurred in late 2025. Mace openly defied Trump and the broader Republican leadership by co-sponsoring the Epstein Files Transparency Act. She joined Democrats to force a floor vote compelling the Justice Department to release unredacted files.

Trump severely opposed the release of these files to protect his associates, reportedly calling Mace a "traitor" during an uncomfortable phone call. Mace doubled down, using the House Oversight Committee in March 2026 to subpoena Attorney General Pam Bondi over withheld files.

This second break effectively ended their alliance. Trump refused to endorse Mace in her 2026 bid for South Carolina Governor, backing her rival instead. Left without Trump’s backing, Mace finished a distant fifth in the June primary. She later admitted to NewsNation that breaking with Trump over the Epstein files "may have ended my political career," but maintained she would never sacrifice her values for an endorsement.
