Pete Hegseth’s Wife Reportedly Travels With Him to Keep Him on Track Amid Scrutiny Over Drinking Allegations

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s most trusted aide may not be on the Pentagon payroll.

The New York Times reported Jennifer Hegseth is frequently by his side because he relies on her to help keep him out of trouble, after years of public scrutiny over past allegations about his drinking.

Based on 20 current and former administration officials and sources close to Jennifer, she has also become one of Pete’s most influential advisers.

Jennifer reportedly helps prepare Pete for appearances, sits in on meetings with journalists, interviews potential staffers and helps brainstorm Defense Department video ideas.

The Wall Street Journal previously reported that Jennifer attended a meeting between U.S. and U.K. officials about military intelligence sharing with Ukraine. British officials reportedly kept the discussion general because her presence made them uneasy, then held a smaller meeting without her.

John Ullyot, a former Pentagon chief spokesperson, told the NYT that Jennifer once questioned him for roughly 40 minutes after summoning him for what he expected to be a casual introduction.

“It’s bonkers that a defense secretary would involve his wife in his sensitive official duties, including sharing details of an impending military operation, and face zero consequences,” John said. “Any president deserves better judgment from his national security leaders.”

Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs Sean Parnell said the Defense Department “not only welcomes her current leadership but actively plans to involve her even more deeply in the future.”

Crisis and reputation strategist Robbie Vorhaus, who is not advising those involved, said the concern depends on what role she is actually playing.

“Good leaders know themselves. They know their strengths and vulnerabilities, and they know who they trust,” Robbie said.

“If Jennifer Hegseth’s presence helps her husband stay focused, disciplined and accountable, I don’t see that as troubling. I see someone who knows what works for him and is willing to use it,” he added.

“The question isn’t whether Pete Hegseth needs his wife nearby,” he continued. “The question is whether her presence helps him exercise better judgment and do his job better.”

“If a spouse is exercising governmental authority, influencing official decisions outside the appropriate channels, or creating confusion about who is making those decisions, that’s a legitimate issue,” Robbie explained. “But that’s very different from a spouse being present, supportive and trusted.”

Pete has credited Jennifer with helping him, telling Megyn Kelly in 2024, “My Jenny, my wife, Jennifer, changed my life, saved me, there’s just no doubt about it.”

Robbie said people should focus on how Pete is handling the job, rather than his personal life.

“Ultimately, the public should judge Secretary Hegseth on his conduct, judgment and performance,” he said, “not on how often his wife is standing beside him.”
