Tony Romo’s road back to the CBS broadcast booth just got more complicated.
The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, 46, was issued three new citations on August 27 stemming from his July arrest in Wisconsin. He now faces citations for first-offense operating while intoxicated, unsafe passing on the right and possessing open intoxicants.
Romo was previously cited for refusing to take an intoxication test after arrest. He is scheduled to appear in court September 21.
New Citations in Wisconsin
The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback accepted responsibility for the incident.
Romo was pulled over by the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office after a July 23 traffic stop. He was allegedly seen passing cars in a gore area, which separates interstate traffic from vehicles entering from an on-ramp.
Authorities said Romo performed poorly on field sobriety tests before he was taken into custody, booked on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence and released.
“Tony accepts full responsibility for his actions and has taken proactive steps to ensure that this isolated civil matter is properly resolved,” an unnamed spokesperson said in a statement to multiple outlets. “We are working with local authorities to bring this matter to a close and we are communicating with CBS about next steps.”
CBS Keeps Romo on Leave
Tony Romo remained on leave from his CBS broadcasting duties as the case continued.
CBS Sports placed Romo on leave from broadcasting duties after the arrest, saying the move would remain in place “until further notice.”
Romo has been CBS’ lead NFL game analyst since 2017, after spending his entire playing career with the Cowboys from 2004 to 2016. He made four Pro Bowls before moving into television, where his high-profile booth role quickly made him one of the network’s most recognizable football voices.

A CBS executive said no final decision had been made about Tony Romo’s future with the network.
CBS Sports president David Berson said earlier this month that Romo’s future with the network remains unsettled.
“It’s an evolving situation and therefore we are still assessing,” Berson said. “There is no timetable or final decision at this time.”
An Uncertain Booth Return
The new citations raised fresh questions about Tony Romo’s return to the broadcast booth.
The new citations are likely to keep questions about Romo’s TV future alive heading into the NFL season.
Former NFL quarterback and sports radio host Boomer Esiason speculated on WFAN that Romo may need to step away and get things “straightened out.”
“If I had to guess, purely speculation given what’s going on right now, I would think it’s over,” Esiason said. “He may end up going somewhere else and getting things straightened out.”
