The Way They Were: A Look Back At 10 Years Of Ben Affleck And Jennifer Garner Before Their Divorce Announcement

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner spent 10 years together, which is basically a whole lifetime in Hollywood, but the A-listers have gone from married to miserable before announcing their divorce on June 30. Here’s a peek into their lives before they split and a look back at the way they were.

"After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce," the couple said in a joint statement. "We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time. This will be our only comment on this private, family matter. Thank you for understanding."

After not being seen together in months, a source told OK! in May that they were living separate lives.

“Often, when Ben and Jen have a problem, they just agree to ride it out and be miserable together until they can get some time apart,” a pal of Garner’s said. “Jennifer has close friends who think that she and Ben are a horrible fit, despite how much he loves being a father to those kids.”

Since, Ben has been seen showing face with his wife and their three children, but continued to look miserable during their public outings. But he wasn’t wasn’t always so gloomy.

The pair first met on the set of 2003’s Pearl Harbor but fell in love filming Daredevil and began dating in 2004, just after Ben split from Jennifer Lopez.

"That’s where I found my wife," he said. "We met on Pearl Harbor, which people hate, but we fell in love on Daredevil."

They announced they were engaged in 2005, but paired the announcement with news of a baby on the way!

Fast forward a few months and the newlyweds welcomed their first child, Violet, in December 2005.

After celebrating three years of marriage, Garner announced she was pregnant again with their second child, Seraphina, who came into the world in January 2009.

Another three years pass, and the couple welcome their third child, a son named Samuel, in 2012 but not without controversy.

Reports emerged that the couple was on the rocks because of Ben’s drinking and gambling habits while Jen was still pregnant in 2011 after he spent millions of dollars behind her back.

Flash forward to 2015, and rumors begin that their marriage is crumbling, except this time it was for real.
