Others are longtime churchgoers, whose faith has aided their journey through some mountainous challenges. After taking in our 25 celebrities who go to church, don’t be surprised if you utter an “Amen” or “Hallelujah!”
1. Justin Bieber
Despite a rebellious past, or perhaps because of it, superstar singer Justin Bieber has found Jesus Christ and righted his ways. The teen singer was raised Christian, but once fame permeated his soul, he turned into a troublemaker—even getting arrested on several occasions. Justin attends Hillsong Church in Los Angeles (and in New York when he’s there) and has come under the guidance of its minister, Brian Houston. The Pentecostal church had its origins in Australia and has slowly but surely made its mark in America. Of course, having Justin as a member certainly adds to the member rolls.
2. Leonardo DiCaprio
Oscar winner and one of the A-lister among A-listers, Leonardo DiCaprio attends at Bel Air Presbyterian Church. He goes when he can and is in town (as we all know he is quite the globe trotter) usually with his latest girlfriend by his side. Like Justin above, the actor experienced fame at an early age, and after being known more for his exploits than his professional efforts, he reportedly settled down (religiously, at least) and started attending the Bel Air establishment.
3. Matthew McConaughey
Texas born and bred actor Matthew McConaughey has long made the spiritual side of his life a priority. He, his wife Camila Alves and their children also attend the Santa Monica Episcopalian church. When in the state of his birth, he attends a non-denominational church that he reported welcomes all. "It's based in the faith that Jesus is the son of God, that he died for our sins, but many different denominations come in," he said.
4. Eva Longoria
The woman who has had more than one profile of hers entitled “Deliver Us From Eva” (paraphrasing the famous Bible verse, obvs) was born a Roman Catholic. Although Eva Longoria has embraced other ideas from varying religions, she still attends services at a church in North Hollywood and tries to go quite regularly. “I really looked at the church as an institution that provided guidance as to how we were raised,” Eva said in a recent interview with Parade. “To me, the Catholic church was inclusive. It included the blind, the poor, the minorities, the disabled.”
5. Mark Wahlberg
Raised Catholic, Mark Wahlberg lost his way in his younger years. He got into trouble and wound up in jail for a brief time. But he emerged as a solid individual largely, he credits, because of his return to his faith. Mark is a regular at his Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Los Angeles, visiting his holy site on more than just Sundays. It is where his daughter Grace celebrated her communion recently.
6. Tim McGraw
Tim McGraw was raised Baptist and still attends a church of that sect in Nashville with his wife, Faith Hill, and their family. Being religious has been a help to the country superstar as he had a rough upbringing. His bi-polar father, he discovered, was not his dad at all. In fact, Tim learned that his papa was baseball legend, pitcher Tug McGraw. Look what he said about the entity that is the religious journey in an interview with KNOX news. “You’re searching constantly for the next step, the next level and consciousness in your spirituality, who you are as a human being and what you contribute to society or what God means to you is always a course everyone goes on,” he said.
7. Angela Bassett
West Angeles Church of God in Christ on Crenshaw Boulevard in Los Angeles is the spiritual home of Oscar nominee Angela Bassett. The woman who voiced Queen Esther in the audio The Bible Experience has said that “loving God is like my being black. I just am.” She is joined at that religious institution by Denzel Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, Magic Johnson and Stevie Wonder. The choir there is so stunning, it has even earned a Grammy nod for Best Traditional Gospel in 2009. She has remained faithful to God over the years, and credits that with how she has managed to stay grounded in a business that fosters fame and fortune. “All those things are nice, but not if you serve them,” she told Parade. They have the potential to devour.”
8. Jennifer Garner
Proudly raised in West Virginia, Jennifer Garner grew up a member of Christ Church United Methodist. Her kids—Violet, Samuel and Seraphina—were even baptized there! She wandered away from regular attendance at church for some years. But, it was her appearance in the faith-based true story Miracle from Heaven that had her looking at her kids and reexamining faith in her life and the desire to introduce it to her kin. “There was something about doing this film and talking to my kids about it and realizing that they were looking for the structure of church every Sunday,” Jennifer said to Good Morning Texas. “So, it was a great gift of this film that it took us back to finding our local Methodist church and going every Sunday.” She attends a Methodist church in Pacific Palisades.
9. William and Kate
The Royal Couple, Prince William and Kate Middleton, having long been collectively religious. Their Church of England experience included visiting hallowed halls as part of their first dates. In fact, soon after the birth of their first child, George, they used a rare parents-free-time moment to attend church with the Queen and William's father, Prince Charles.
10. Kris Jenner
As anyone who watched The People vs. OJ on FX could tell you, the Kardashians, as led by Robert and Kris Kardashian, were quite religious. That type of upbringing is hard to change, and although much has altered in the lives of all those Kardashians, one thing has remained constant and that is their devotion to their faith. Kris Jenner has the family involved at California Community Church, getting the storefront church in Calabasas off the ground. She reportedly sends her kids a bible verse every morning via text to get their day started off right.
11. Kim Kardashian
Meanwhile, Kim Kardashian is a regular at Life Change Community Church in Agoura Hills, California. She enjoys getting those texts from mom, saying, “We don't share it much, but we're really religious. We start our day with a group chat with a Bible verse from my mom, and everyone chimes in on the meaning of it. We are very Christian—and our work ethic and our discipline comes from so many years at Catholic school.”
12. Kourtney Kardashian
With Kourtney Kardashian going through some rough times with Scott Disick, it is nice to know she had some help not only from her family, but from her spiritual family. She has been seen at the same church as Justin Bieber (that is where their rumored relationship got started), Hillsong in Beverly Hills. She has felt so comfortable there that she recently brought her boyfriend, Younes Bendjima, to her beloved church.
13. Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson, have been regular churchgoers at the Greek Orthodox church on Normandie Avenue in Los Angeles for decades. St. Sophia has counted the power couple as members and welcomed Tom in after he converted. See, Tom was raised Catholic (and his family even did a stint in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) but converted when he married Rita in 1988.
14. Fergie
When she was married to Josh Duhamel, the pair (both raised Catholic) would go to church with their son, Axl. Now that the two are separated, Fergie still attends a Catholic church in Brentwood, and loves to bring her son along when it is a mommy-son day. The Black Eyed Peas singer was not always religious. She veered away from her Catholic roots and has even admitted to being addicted to meth and walking down that dark path. Fergie found her way back to religion, got sober, and is devout to this day. Sounds like she'll need that religious support as the Fergie and Josh Duhamel custody battle is heating up.
15. Vanessa Hudgens
High School Musical made Vanessa Hudgens a star. She has gone on to a slew of other roles that have kept her busy. Despite her rigorous schedule, Vanessa always makes time to fan her spiritual fires. Vanessa attends Fifth Church of Christ Scientist in Hollywood and is a regular, at least when she’s not out of town filming or on a press tour!
16. Kelsey Grammer
The man who was Frasier for decades (first on Cheers and then on the spin-off Frasier) has had a long and documented history with substance abuse and questionable moments with the law. Kelsey Grammer was raised Catholic and soon after sobering up, he became a regular at Santa Monica Church in… you guessed it, Santa Monica.
17. Selena Gomez
Brought up Catholic, singer/actress Selena Gomez even got a purity ring blessed by the church when she was 13. She has never swayed from her commitment to her spirituality, although her place of worship and sect of Christianity may have altered over the years. Lately, she’s been seen going to the Saban Theatre, where Churchome is located, and also Hillsong… a place also frequented by another person on this list and an ex of Selena, the one and only Justin Bieber. It is her faith that she says helped her get through the trying experience that was her kidney failure and kidney transplant in 2017.
18. Beyonce
There was news recently that Beyonce bought a church in New Orleans with her husband, Jay-Z. Makes sense, given the fact that the duo purchased a multi-million-dollar home in The Big Easy recently. Should Bey turn that into her church of choice is still yet to be seen. What is known, is that since she was little, Beyonce attended Rudy Rasmus’ St. Johns Church in Houston, Texas and still to this day makes her way to that facility to enrich her spiritual soul. In the “did you know?” department, Beyonce’s singing group—Destiny’s Child—is actually a moniker from the Book of Isaiah!
19. Nick Jonas
It is not hard to believe that Nick Jonas is a man ruled by the influence of God. His father is an ordained minister and singer-songwriter who often sang religious songs to his kids while on various family trips. Of course, as we all know, Nick joined his brothers Joe and Kevin and formed the uber popular group The Jonas Brothers. Their Christianity was always present in their songs as they never broached topics that would be considered controversial. Nick will tell anyone who listens how important religion is to him. “I’ve had an incredibly intense journey with faith and religion and my growth. My belief in God is still very strong and important to me as a person, and I think that’s all that should matter,” he said. “The other things around it are not as important to me as my relationship with God.” Nick has been seen repeatedly at the New York City location for the super popular Hillsong Church.
20. Mel Gibson
Hollywood legend Mel Gibson is a man who takes his relationship with God quite seriously. In fact, he was raised in a strict sect of the Catholic religion and even built his own church, The Church of the Holy Family. Located in Agoura, California, the church is ultra-private and is not associated with an Archdiocese of any sort. Mel's church has about 70 members. They have rejected much of the 70 reforms adopted by the Catholic Church in recent years and are firmly devout in the more traditional, gospel-based origins of their religion.
21. Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green
The couple that prays together, stays together. That must be the case as Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green have weathered storms that also included a potential divorce. They made up and now they are as strong as ever. Megan and Brian say their prayers at Oasis Church, which features a 3,000-strong membership. The Miracle Mile (Los Angeles) locale is Art Deco and quite pleasing to the eye, adding to the serenity for members with each weekly service.
22. Candace Cameron-Bure
Both Candace Cameron-Bure and her brother Kirk Cameron have not been shy about expressing their faith strongly in a town that might shrug off such sentiments. The Fuller House star has even admitted that “God is my best friend. I couldn’t do it without Him, nor would I ever want to try.” For Cameron-Bure, it is not necessarily about going to a physical church each week, although she does. “We go to church on Sundays, but it is not just a weekly thing. We read our bible daily and do a daily devotional every morning before school.” She even credits Jesus as the secret to her marriage.
23. Tyler Perry
Although a Tyler Perry film can run the gamut in terms of subject matter, there is a connection between most of them that is hard to ignore… faith. The superstar writer-director-actor-producer is so interconnected with his religion that he, like Mel Gibson, has built his own church. Tyler built the church at his Beverly Hills home and it is quite a bit like the one he remembered from his youth. “I had this church built in my backyard,” Tyler posted on his Facebook page, announcing the christening of his son at the holy site behind his home. “It’s almost a direct replica of the one my Mother grew up in. It was in her honor. I know she was with us in spirit.” He also puts his money where his faith is, recently donating a million dollars to Joel Osteen's church for Hurricane Harvey relief.
24. Joe Jonas
See Nick Jonas above for brother Joe Jonas' religious upbringing. Now that they are both big-time musicians, each has followed a unique spiritual path. Joe’s journey has led him to a church in Los Angeles with the most interesting of names… especially given how popular this type of entertainment is on TV these days. Jonas is an active member of Reality LA, that meets out of the auditorium of Helen Bernstein High School. One thing the Reality LA church has that must be a draw for the Jonas Brothers member? A church band that supposedly is quite rocking!
25. Mickey Rourke
There is a little Catholic Church on the Sunset Strip that is the religious home of Oscar nominee Mickey Rourke. St. Victor, on Holloway Drive, sits in the shadow of Hollywood monuments and it has a rich history that is intertwined in Tinseltown itself. St. Victor was instrumental in the adopting of the so-called Production Code as the church’s leader, Monsignor John J. Devlin, was an adviser to studio heads seeking to push back on controversy. Of course, it has been decades since the “Code” was in effect. Good thing, something tells us noted rebel-rouser Mickey would not be a member if that was still the case!
