In Case You Missed It: See The Moment That Arie Luyendyk Jr. Dumps Fiancée For Runner-Up

For the first time in years, Chris Harrison was not exaggerating when he said to prepare for the most dramatic finale in Bachelor history!

On Monday’s three-hour finale, Arie Luyendyk Jr. dropped a bomb on his unsuspecting fiancée, Becca Kufrin, when he revealed he wanted to end their engagement so he could start dating his runner-up, Lauren Burnham.

Here’s how it went down:

After feeling conflicted about who he wanted to propose to, up until the final hours before his scheduled engagement, Arie confessed that while he had finally decided upon a winner, he had no real explanation as to why he was breaking things off with his runner-up.

“I’ve been through that breakup and I think the one thing you want is answers on why,” Arie explained, as the cameras showed a cheerful Lauren walking to what she thought would be her proposal. “I want to tell her something that could really help her through this, but I have no real reason to give her.”

After Arie broke things off with Lauren, she asked for answers as to why he did it. However, Arie’s “explanation” for the break-up was the first sign of trouble on the horizon.

“I didn’t know," he told Lauren. "I didn’t know, fully, until this morning...I was in love with her, I was in love with you. I’m sorry to put you through this.”

The two finally said goodbye with a kiss, and Lauren was sent on her way. However, as she was being driven away, her last words on the show (she thought) seemed to eerily foreshadow Becca and Arie’s fate.

“He said he’s in love with me and he’s in love with her and he had no idea what he was going to do until this morning,” Lauren said through tears as she was driven away. “Did that not terrify him? How can you get down on one knee if you weren’t sure until like, three hours ago? I really think he made a mistake.” #QTNA

*Cue Arie’s proposal to Becca.

“This morning, I woke up and I thought about you,” Arie said to Becca as he got down on one knee. “I thought about you and our kids together, I thought about us when we’re old, and I choose you today. But I choose you every day from here on out. I love you so much. Becca, will you marry me?”

In the days and weeks following his proposal, the newly engaged couple seemed to be in complete bliss. However, unbeknownst to Becca, Arie was secretly wrestling with his decision.

“Sometimes when I’m on these little getaways with Becca I think about, 'What would this be like with Lauren?'” he admitted in a private confessional as a montage of the couple’s post-Bachelor moments showed on screen. “It just kills me, because I have a great woman next to me. I go to bed and I think about Lauren. I wake up and I think about Lauren. And I know Becca sees when I struggle. She sees the fact that my mind is somewhere else. She knows that I think about Lauren.”

He continued: “Just thinking about the possibility of something with Lauren is making me want to risk it all. Because I really feel like I made a mistake. I’ve had a change of heart. Look, I know this isn’t going to be a popular decision. But it’s worth it to me. I’m doing it because I love Lauren.”

And that’s when the most heartbreaking Bachelor break-up commenced. (Yes, Bachelor cameras captured the whole thing.)

First, a smiling and excited Becca was shown arriving at one of the couple’s secret getaways.

After gushing about her proposal, engagement ring, and relationship with Arie to Bachelor cameras, she was then directed into the L.A. mansion she thought she'd be spending the week in with Arie.

Instead, it was there that Arie blindsided her, telling her, amongst other things, that he was leaving her to be with Lauren B.

“How do I start this?” Arie began. “You know that I’ve been struggling a little bit. I think over the last couple of times we’ve been hanging out, I’ve been really trying to sort my feelings out and trying to grasp this whole thing. The reality of it is that being with you, although it’s been everything that I wanted, I still think about her. I think you sense that.”

Arie then went on a rant about how he wants to give his relationship with Lauren a chance, and how he can no longer be half-in with Becca since his heart belongs to someone else.

“You’ve got to be f**king kidding me,” she replied. “Everything that you told me about her, your relationship with her — you flat out said you couldn’t see a future with her, you couldn’t quantify why you fell in love with her. Was that just words to me? You said you still had feelings for her that you were struggling with and I was trying to do what I could to help you. What did I do wrong?”

Ultimately, the break-up ended with Arie leaving, and Becca in tears as she refused to hear any more from her now ex-fiancé.

Becca’s story didn’t end there though.

Once the episode ended, Chris brought out the now-single Bachelor winner live on the finale after-show to get her thoughts on her dramatic split.

“It’s brutal,” she admitted. “I mean, when it all happened I feel like I kind of blacked out and so much was going through my mind that I couldn’t take it all in or really focus on even what I wanted to say. To watch that back now, of course, I had feelings for him and I loved him, so it’s a hard heartbreak…I was ready to do it all.”

Becca also revealed that she hasn’t heard a peep from her ex since he blindsided her that day.

“I haven’t heard anything,” she said. “After he left, I went through all the motions. I was sad, I stayed in L.A. for a few days and cried for probably four days straight and grieved the loss of that relationship and the future that I thought we were going to have. I am angry at times, I feel betrayed a lot of the time just because I feel like I was lied to for so long.”

Fans now have to wait until Tuesday night to find out the outcome of Arie and Lauren’s relationship, when the 22nd season of The Bachelor concludes with a two-hour live After the Final Rose special.

Bachelor: After The Final Rose airs at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
