Colton Dixon said goodbye to the American Idol stage on Thursday night and spoke to OK! about his sometimes “frustrating,” but ultimately rewarding experience with the judges after making his exit.
“I was frustrated after I did ‘September’ just because they tell me to be true to who I am and they love the way I change up a song,” Colton told OK! on a conference call Friday morning of Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler not loving his recent performance.
Colton still admitted that he could slightly understand where the mentors’ critical remarks were coming from this week.
“It didn’t show off a lot of vocals and the range wasn’t crazy, so I understand it from a vocal competition stand point,” the Tennessee-native told OK! of his song choice, adding, “I kind of get it, but that was a little frustrating.”
Regardless of sometimes unfavorable comments, Colton said that the judges were “encouraging” for the most part, especially Randy.
“I love them all and they all bring something different, but Randy has really reached out and invested in me and I love seeing that. He told me to never stray too far from who you are and always up your game.”
Now that Colton has been eliminated, what does he plan to do musically, taking into account all of the invaluable advice he has received on the FOX show?
“I definitely want to do Christian music,” the 20-year-old told reporters, “Right now I'm going to write as much as I can and see what comes out.”
