Even for a somber occasion, Kate Middleton manages to bring her fashion A-game.
The Duchess of Cambridge attended the funeral for Prince Philip, husband to Queen Elizabeth II, on Saturday, April 17, at Windsor Castle. The Duke of Edinburgh, and the grandfather of her husband Prince William, was the longest-serving royal consort in history when he passed away on Friday, April 9, at the age of 99.
For the memorial event, which was limited to just close friends and family due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Duchess wore a black Roland Mouret dress underneath an elegant black Catherine Walker wool coat dress with pleats falling gently from the shoulder to tie into a bow at the neckline.
She accessorized with classic black pumps, a black face mask and topped off her look with a Philip Treacy velvet pillbox hat with net veil.
The 39-year-old, who was close to the Duke of Edinburgh, also borrowed special pearl items from Her Majesty's personal collection of jewels. Her four-row Japanese Pearl choker necklace was previously worn by Kate for the Queen and Prince Philip's 70th wedding anniversary dinner at Windsor Castle in 2017. The necklace, featuring a central curved diamond clasp, was originally gift for the Queen from the Japanese government.
The necklace was also once worn by her late mother-in-law Princess Diana in 1982. The Queen loaned it to Diana, who loved pearls, for a banquet given by Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus of the Netherlands at Hampton Court Palace during the Dutch royal family's visit to the U.K. — one of her first royal engagements a year after her marriage to .
The head monarch wore the choker herself in the 1980s and 1990s, and to a dinner celebrating former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's 70th Birthday in London in 1995.
Kate also wore the Bahrain Pearl Diamond Drop Earrings which also came from Her Majesty's private collection, and were also worn by Diana in 1982. The earrings were crafted from pearls gifted to the Queen and Philip from the ruler of Bahrain at the time of their wedding in 1947.
