Brad Pitt Reveals He's No Longer Sober After 7 Years: 'Got Back Off the Wagon'

Brad Pitt confirmed that he has returned to drinking in moderation after maintaining seven years of absolute sobriety.

Speaking with Esquire magazine, the 62-year-old actor stated, "I was sober for seven years. And then I got back off the wagon."

During the chat, Pitt openly offered wine to journalist Ryan D'Agostino.

He noted that while he loves wine, he previously took it too far and must now remain disciplined.

He clarified that he now drinks "in a more restrained manner," explaining that while he can enjoy a few glasses of wine, he can no longer drink heavily and must remain professional.

Pitt originally committed to sobriety and joined Alcoholics Anonymous following his 2016 split from Angelina Jolie.

Pitt stated he "can have a few, but I can't have a lot," noting that he briefly got overconfident a couple of times before realizing large quantities are "not good for me.”

In the same interview, Pitt candidly discussed a dark period resulting from "family stuff," admitting he briefly experienced heavy thoughts of self-harm and suicidal ideation, though his survival instincts quickly kicked in.

Alongside details of his personal life, the profile highlighted Pitt's upcoming work, including his role in the racing movie F1 and his reprisal of Cliff Booth in the David Fincher-directed Netflix film The Adventures of Cliff Booth.

The intersection of Pitt’s sobriety journey and his co-ownership of the French vineyard Château Miraval highlights a complex contradiction that has fueled his years-long legal warfare with Jolie.

While Pitt dedicated himself to Alcoholics Anonymous and absolute sobriety following their 2016 separation, he simultaneously fought aggressively in court to retain control of his multimillion-dollar rosé wine empire.

Pitt and Jolie purchased the 1,200-acre Château Miraval in 2008 for roughly $60 million and used it as their wedding venue in 2014.

After their split, Jolie sold her 50 percent stake to a subsidiary of the Stoli Group in 2021 for $64 million. Pitt sued her in 2022, claiming she violated a verbal pact not to sell without mutual consent.

Jolie’s legal team has frequently leveraged Pitt's history with alcohol in the dispute. Court filings noted the irony of Pitt fighting fiercely for an alcohol brand when his heavy drinking —specifically an alleged drunken altercation on a private plane in 2016 — was the primary catalyst for the family's collapse and his subsequent sobriety.
