Donald Trump turned 80 in June and is the oldest person to assume the U.S. presidency.

While the photos have prompted intense online discussion, the White House has previously stated that Trump's recurring bruising is benign and linked to standard medical factors.

The White House and medical personnel have repeatedly addressed the discoloration seen on the president's hands and arms over the past year.

On January 22, 2026, Trump and his team clarified that he takes a daily 325 mg regimen of aspirin for cardiovascular prevention, which significantly thins his blood and makes him highly susceptible to noticeable bruising from minor contact.

Former White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced during a comprehensive medical review in 2025 that Trump deals with chronic venous insufficiency. This common vein condition often causes localized swelling, skin discoloration and blood pooling in the limbs.

The administration has consistently cited "tissue damage from frequent handshaking" as a primary reason for the trauma to his hands and lower arms, noting his extensive daily physical interactions with supporters.

Dr. Sean Barbabella, the president's personal physician, released an official memorandum declaring Trump to be in "excellent health." The report explicitly noted his slight leg swelling and hand bruising as "benign and common" issues that do not affect his broader cardiac, pulmonary or neurological capabilities.

Donald Trump is frequently seen using makeup to cover his bruised hands.

Not everyone is convinced the elderly POTUS is in tip-top shape, as he is often photographed with clumps of concealer used to cover bruising.

Commenting on the heavy cosmetics used on the president's hands, makeup artist Brandi Boulet told The Washington Post, "How can you be in that position and not have somebody be able to cover a bruise?... It looks like somebody just mashed on some foundation.”

On September 3, Nobel Peace Prize-winning psychiatrist Dr. Henry David Abraham issued a stark warning regarding Trump's mental and physical health, stating that his condition has noticeably worsened.

Speaking on "The Dean Obeidallah Show," Dr. Abraham — Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine and co-recipient of the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize — raised alarms over what he described as a pattern of rambling rants, sudden outbursts and loss of impulse control.

Abraham was one of 36 medical professionals who previously signed an open letter entered into the Congressional Record calling for Trump’s removal under the 25th Amendment.

Donald Trump Accused of Cognitive Decline

Donald Trump's cognitive abilities have been questioned by critics since his return to the White House.

He cited a "marked deterioration in cognitive functioning" alongside "severely impaired judgment.”

Abraham focused heavily on the danger of the 80-year-old president maintaining unchecked control over the U.S. nuclear arsenal, remarking, "I think we're in even more danger of Donald Trump using a nuclear weapon in a fit of pique or rage or confusion or poor impulse control than ever before.”

Outside analysts and doctors also pointed to visible signs like severe daytime sleepiness (somnolence), his heavily covered hand bruising, and ankle swelling as compounding indicators of his physical decline.
