Donald Trump Slams Lindsay Clancy's Actions as 'Horrible' and Says 'There'll Be a Price' After Judge Declares Mistrial

President Donald Trump weighed in on the Lindsay Clancy murder trial after a jury couldn't come to a unanimous decision about the charges against her for killing her three young children.

"I assume there’s going to be another trial. It’s a terrible situation," Trump, 80, told reporters during a meeting in the Oval Office, moments after the case was declared a mistrial on Friday, September 4, per the California Post. "Look, she did a horrible, horrible thing. Can’t be worse."

"But you’ll find out what the price to pay is. There’ll be a price," the POTUS continued. "It's going to be a mental institution or jail or something. But I guess they’re going to go through another trial. It’s too bad."

As OK! previously reported, Clancy was charged with first-degree murder after she confessed to strangling her three young children with exercise equipment in the basement of her Duxbury, Mass., home in January 2023.

After the murders, the mom-of-three allegedly attempted suicide by jumping out of the home's second-story window, which left her wheelchair-bound.

Though Clancy did not dispute that she committed the murders, her defense team argued that she was experiencing a severe postpartum psychiatric episode at the time of the killings. She pleaded not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility, which is essentially an insanity defense.

It was up to the jury to determine whether she was guilty of first-degree murder, manslaughter or not guilty by lack of criminal responsibility. If convicted of the first-degree charges, she faced life in prison. If the jury found her not criminally responsible, she would be committed to a state psychiatric hospital.

Clancy's home state of Massachusetts offered an interesting obstacle, as in most states it is up to the defense to prove a defendant lacked criminal responsibility. In Massachusetts, it is the prosecution's burden, which must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that she understood her decision to kill her children.

After seven days of intense deliberations, the jury was unable to determine if she was struggling with postpartum psychosis at the time of the January 2023 murders.

Clancy nor her family reportedly showed "no emotion" as the mistrial verdict was read on Friday, September 4.

Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz said there are no immediate plans regarding a second trial.

"This was and has always been about getting justice for those beautiful babies," Cruz said, per KSL.
