Dr. Anthony Fauci's Private Texts Showed Careful Consideration of COVID-19 Vaccines for Pregnant Women

Newly released text messages from 2021 show Dr. Anthony Fauci discussing the limited pregnancy data available for COVID 19 vaccines and noting that potential risks should be weighed against the benefits. Fauci also raised a theoretical concern that fever and an immune response following a second vaccine dose could be associated with miscarriage during the first trimester. At the same time, he noted that more than 10,000 pregnant women had already been vaccinated and that "no issues have arisen."

Republican Senators Rand Paul and Ron Johnson publicly released the text messages from Fauci's government-issued cellphone as part of their ongoing investigations into his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The release has sparked contrasting interpretations, with critics arguing that Fauci's private discussion of potential risks differed from the more reassuring public messaging at the time, while others point to the messages as evidence of the risk-benefit analysis public health officials were conducting as data on vaccination during pregnancy remained limited. The CDC later explicitly recommended COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy in April 2021, after additional safety data became available.

The private messages occurred in early 2021, a period when pregnant individuals had been excluded from initial clinical trials, but real-world data on vaccination during pregnancy was beginning to accumulate.

He texted that clinicians and patients "must weigh the potential risks against the benefits," noting that a COVID-19 infection could be "especially" serious during pregnancy.

In the same exchange, Dr. Fauci pointed out that more than 10,000 pregnant women had already received the COVID-19 vaccine under Emergency Use Authorization, with "no issues" reported.

Following this initial period of data gathering, major health organizations analyzed additional safety data and formalized recommendations for COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy.

On August 11, 2021, the CDC recommended that pregnant people get vaccinated after releasing data showing no increased risk of miscarriage among nearly 2,500 pregnant women who received an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine before 20 weeks of pregnancy.

Subsequent studies involving more than 1 million pregnancies worldwide have found no increased risk of major pregnancy complications, including miscarriage, preterm delivery, stillbirth or birth defects, among those who received mRNA COVID-19 vaccines.

However, declaring there is absolutely "no harm" requires distinguishing between common, expected side effects and severe medical complications.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) continues to recommend routine COVID-19 vaccination for pregnant individuals, stating that accumulated safety data from millions of doses show no increased risk of adverse maternal, fetal or neonatal outcomes.

The release of these text messages comes amid an ongoing congressional investigation into the epidemiologist's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. It follows a congressional hearing during which Dr. Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment rights more than 100 times and a Senate committee voted to hold him in contempt of Congress. The developments also come after the release of more than 1,100 pages of Fauci's pandemic-era diaries.

Dr. Fauci was a key architect of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), launched by President George W. Bush in 2003. The program has since been credited with saving 25 million lives by expanding access to HIV treatment, prevention and care around the world.

During his tenure at NIAID, Fauci also played a prominent role in advancing HIV research and the development of antiretroviral therapies, helping contribute to the transformation of HIV from a once largely fatal infection into a manageable chronic condition for people with access to effective treatment.

Supporters also credit Fauci's leadership at NIAID and within the federal government's public health infrastructure with helping coordinate research and vaccine development during the COVID-19 pandemic. Federal agencies and researchers worked alongside private-sector partners to develop and evaluate vaccines at unprecedented speed.
