Katy Perry recently opened up about the emotional toll her split from Orlando Bloom took on her.

"It was probably the hardest time. My friends were all hanging out back home. I was crying and just feeling far away. But then my angels went to work. They really showed up," Perry said in a new interview with People.

The breakup unfolded while Perry was in the middle of her Lifetimes Tour, leaving her to navigate the personal upheaval while maintaining a demanding performance schedule around the world.

Perry and Bloom split while she was on tour.

Perry said the year brought major personal and professional challenges, but the tour ultimately helped her reconnect with what she wanted from her life and career.

"I learned how to step back into my purpose," she said.

She also reflected on the commitment she made to completing the 91-show tour despite everything happening away from the stage.

"This is my gift. And I learned how to step back into my purpose. It took a while — a few years — for me to get there," Perry said. "I had to put [touring] on pause. I was really looking after my daughter, there was the pandemic, and it's not easy to do a world, a proper world tour."

The experience also gave Perry an unexpected opportunity to meet someone who would become important in her personal life.

Perry met her new love Trudeau during the same tour.

Perry described meeting Justin Trudeau as one of the unexpected rewards of a difficult year, saying the relationship emerged while she was on the road.

"I got the greatest gift from this tour: I got to meet the love of my life," said the "Firework" singer.

She had already imagined finding that kind of relationship, even writing it down among the things she hoped to manifest. "No. 10 just says, 'True Love.' And I think that's where we're at," she said.

Perry said their relationship has also brought a sense of comfort after the upheaval of the previous year.

"He knows the words, he's supportive, and he's in awe; it's super healing," she said of the former Canadian prime minister. "He is really heart-centered, and I think that we align in that way. I'm so grateful."

Perry said she had manifested her new relationship with Trudeau.

Perry said the end of her relationship with Bloom made her reflect on what she wanted from a future partnership.

"I wouldn't have stayed in something for nine years if there wasn't really important things to learn. Each relationship is a teacher, right?" she said. "I had to let it go so I could move forward."

She recalled discussing her hopes with her therapist and describing the kind of romance she had always wanted.

"I always wanted this epic legendary love, and I was talking to my therapist about it," Perry said. "Everything in my life is epic, but this is kind of the missing puzzle piece — then it showed up."

Her comments came as she promoted the theatrical release of Katy Perry: The Lifetimes Tour - Live From Paris, which documents the tour that accompanied the turbulent period in her life.
