Keith Urban Breaks Down in Tears Singing About Breakup on Stage After Nicole Kidman Divorce: 'I Never Should Have Let You Go'

A breakup song seemingly hit a nerve with Keith Urban as he became emotional while performing it in front of a live audience.

The 58-year-old singer took the stage at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, where he introduced "We Go Back," a song about unrequited love for an ex.

"This song is about a guy and a girl from a small town. And they know each other so well. They grew up on the same streets. They know all the same places," the musician explained, according to footage obtained by Daily Mail. "They were the first of their friends to fall in love. They had a good thing going until the guy screwed it up."

Urban paused, looked offstage, and said, "I will do that."

The "Baby Come Back" artist then explained that several years passed before the former lovers crossed paths again.

"This guy can't believe it. He sees the girl, she looks exactly the same. They start talking, they are getting along great. She tells him she's got somebody else," he continued, before reciting the song's chorus.

"'I know I never should have let you go. I was young and dumb, and I messed it all up bad,'" he said on stage. '"You tell me that it's too late now, 'cause there's somebody new around. But what we've got is the one thing you'll never have. We go back."'

"We Go Back" is a song on Urban's latest album Flow State, which was released in June – five months after his divorce from Nicole Kidman was finalized. As he performed the song, Urban could be seen wiping away tears.

As OK! previously reported, the Babygirl actress, 59, filed for divorce from the "Steal Away" singer in September 2025 after 19 years of marriage.

The former couple reportedly had been living separately since the beginning of that summer, with their divorce finalized by a judge in January.

Kidman made headlines in early July after she was spotted outside a hotel in Portofino, Italy, with American businessman Michael Reinstein on July 18.

Just two weeks later, they were seen together again when he picked her up from Hollywood Burbank Airport on July 30 in a black Ferrari.

The Practical Magic actress rarely speaks out about her personal life, though she said in an interview earlier this month that even she didn't "expect" the end of her decades-long marriage.

"I had a different view of what my life was going to be, but this is what it is now," she told Vogue on August 13. "You make all these plans and you have all these ideas of what it’s all going to be like and then it’s...not. You have to adjust. You adapt. The future, it’s completely unknown to me right now...Strange."
