'Fearful' Nicole Kidman 'Didn't Expect' Divorce From Keith Urban After 20 Years Together: 'I Had a Different View of My Life'

Nicole Kidman revealed she wasn't expecting her shocking split from her longtime partner Keith Urban.

Kidman, 59, filed for divorce from Urban, 58, in September 2025, with the proceedings finalized in January. But the actress admitted she was just as surprised as anyone about the end of their 20-year marriage.

"I didn't expect this," she told Vogue in an August 13 interview. "I had a different view of what my life was going to be, but this is what it is now."

The Oscar-winner and the country music star share two children, Sunday Rose, 18, and Faith Margaret, 15. Kidman explained that her split from their father forced her to examine her life and adjust her expectations.

"You make all these plans and you have all these ideas of what it’s all going to be like and then it’s...not," she elaborated. "You have to adjust. You adapt. The future, it’s completely unknown to me right now...Strange."

Kidman also admitted that the public split had been "scary" despite enduring multiple publicly scrutinized breakups in the past.

"There was a point where I was very fearful and deeply vulnerable, which is exposing," she reflected. "And then at the same time [I’m] going, 'Well, I can either really not confront it and just curl up, or I can just go forward with an enormous amount of hope.'"

Kidman had another very public divorce almost 25 years prior from actor Tom Cruise. The couple was married for a decade before he filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.

"It’s all new," she mused. "Every time."

Kidman seemed confident that she would get back up on her feet again after her second bombshell divorce, with a resilient spirit and support from loved ones.

"I’ve always wanted to live a well-examined life, so what does that entail? Trying things, making mistakes, failing, getting back up, moving on, embracing love, staying open, keeping the heart open and the possibilities," she explained.

The star is rumored to be dating American multimillionaire Michael Reinstein after the fallout with Urban.

Kidman has received heavy criticism from fans and the media for moving on so quickly after their split, as insiders allege that her ex isn't coping well with the new romance.

But the actress explained that she grew up learning to "take it on the chin."

"I know my character. I know my talent. I know who I am," she declared. "If I make a mistake and it doesn’t connect, or something goes wrong in my life where it’s humiliating, it’s OK. Other people have had that and that’s okay. Take the onus off it."
