Kirk Cameron is opening up about a Fireproof scene that left him questioning how the intense performance might affect his real-life marriage.
The former Growing Pains star recently revisited the 2008 Christian drama in a video titled “I Apologized to God After Filming This Scene.” While watching one of his most heated moments from the movie, Cameron admitted that the experience was deeply uncomfortable.

Kirk Cameron said filming an intense argument scene for ‘Fireproof’ made him 'uncomfortable.'
“I often wonder what my kids think of this when they watch the movie now and they see me playing married to some other woman, and then me yelling and screaming like I’m right about to,” he said before playing a clip from the film.
The scene featured Cameron and costar Erin Bethea arguing intensely as their characters, Caleb and Catherine Holt, struggled with their failing marriage.
For Cameron, getting into that headspace wasn't easy.
“I’ve never talked like that to my wife, to their mom,” Cameron explained. “It actually made me super uncomfortable to even do this, particularly as someone who believes that you’re to honor your wife; in fact, the director got upset with me that I wasn’t angry enough in this scene until I reached this level.”
He Felt Uncomfortable Playing an Angry Husband

Kirk Cameron recalled apologizing to God after filming the scene because he did not want the performance to affect how he treated his real-life wife.
Cameron then showed another scene from Fireproof, in which Caleb and Catherine clash over money, household responsibilities, parenting and work.
The argument eventually escalated, with Caleb shouting directly at Catherine.
“Man, that is so uncomfortable for me to watch. And boy, my sons would drop me if they ever saw me speak to my wife that way,” the actor continued. “I remember actually apologizing to God after doing that.”
For Cameron, the fact that the exchange was fictional didn't completely ease his concerns.
He said he felt the need to seek forgiveness because the behavior went against how he believes people should treat their spouses.
Cameron explained that he felt obliged to seek absolution for the act, simulated though it may have been, “because I should never speak to anyone that way, let alone my wife, even if it’s just an on-screen wife. I hoped that I hadn’t raised my own emotional ceiling to where that would affect the way that I responded to my real wife in real life.”

Cameron's Commitment to Chelsea Noble

Kirk Cameron married fellow ‘Growing Pains’ star Chelsea Noble in 1991, and they have been together for more than 35 years.
Cameron's concerns were also tied to the commitment he made to his wife and fellow Growing Pains star, Chelsea Noble.
The couple married in 1991 and have remained together for more than three decades.
Cameron previously revealed that Noble served as Bethea's body double during kissing scenes in Fireproof because of his “commitment not to kiss any other woman,” per Fox News.
The couple share six children, four of whom are adopted. They also became grandparents in 2024 after their daughter Ahna welcomed her first child.
His Marriage Has Changed Over 35 Years

Kirk Cameron previously revealed Chelsea Noble served as Erin Bethea's body double during kissing scenes in ‘Fireproof.'
Cameron also reflected on his relationship with Noble while speaking with his son in another YouTube clip.
After decades together, he said their connection continues to evolve.
“Mom and I have been living out our love story for 35 years now,” Cameron said. “And it deepens. It changes. It’s a school where you learn how to die to yourself. Emotions change. Feelings change. Circumstances change.”
“And I think, love is the greatest of all things,” he added. “We all hope for it. We all dream about it, and it also can be the most painful thing. The best songs are either about a heart that has been, you know, united in love with somebody else, or it’s been broken by love. I think few things are more powerful than it.”
