Lisa Kudrow recently stirred the pot regarding the controversial relationship between Ross and Rachel on the popular ’90s sitcom Friends.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Kudrow shared her perspective on the enduring debate surrounding the iconic couple.
The Ross and Rachel Debate

The actress shared her stance on the debate on 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.'
The actress, who played the beloved character Phoebe Buffay, discussed whether Ross, portrayed by David Schwimmer, was justified in sleeping with another woman after telling Rachel, played by Jennifer Aniston, that they were “on a break.”
“I’m afraid now to bring it up,” Kudrow admitted, acknowledging the sensitivity surrounding the topic.
Why She Called Ross a Bad Boyfriend

She criticized Ross’ actions.
When asked by Fallon for her opinion, Kudrow responded candidly. “Well, no. But it’s beyond that,” she stated. “It’s beyond break or not— he was a bad boyfriend.” The audience responded with enthusiastic applause, a testament to Kudrow’s viewpoint.
Kudrow expanded on her reasoning by referencing the cast reunion. “We were all so like, ‘They were on a break.’ Like, ‘Rachel, that hysterical shrew, not letting him sleep with someone and won’t get back together,’” she recalled. “She shouldn’t have gotten back with him because he was horrible.”
Fallon playfully asked if Schwimmer was aware of Kudrow’s stance. “He knows now,” he remarked, eliciting laughter from the audience.

Cast Members Share Conflicting Views

The cast holds differing views.
In a past appearance, Schwimmer had firmly stated, “It’s not even a question. They were on a break,” reinforcing his position on the matter. Aniston, on the other hand, expressed a different opinion in a 2021 interview. “For the record… we were SO not on a break,” she asserted.
The debate traces back to Season 3, Episode 16, known as “The One with the Morning After,” where Ross claimed, “We were on a break,” in response to Rachel’s accusations of infidelity.
Friends aired from 1994 to 2004, featuring a talented ensemble cast that included Matthew Perry, Courteney Cox, and Matt LeBlanc. The series has left an indelible mark on popular culture.
Tragically, Perry passed away in October 2023, at the age of 54, due to the acute effects of ketamine. In an emotional tribute, Kudrow revealed her plans to rewatch the series in honor of Perry. “If I make it about Matthew, then that’s OK,” she expressed.
Despite her differing views on the Ross and Rachel relationship, Kudrow expressed admiration for her co-stars. “I’m blown away by Courteney Cox. I’m blown away by [Jennifer Aniston],” she stated, acknowledging their undeniable talent.
Why Fans Still Can’t Agree

Debate remained unresolved.
As the debate over Ross and Rachel continues, Kudrow’s comments have reignited discussions among fans. This ongoing discourse highlights the complexity of their relationship and its lasting impact on audiences.
