Maggie Smith’s two sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens, inherited an estate worth £15,977,325, or approximately $21 million USD following the beloved actress’ death.
Per probate records obtained by E! News, the final value reflected deductions for debts and expenses totaling just over £25,000 ($33,985).
Maggie Smith Left Her Sons A $21 Million Estate
Maggie Smith’s two sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens, inherited an estate valued at approximately $21 million.
Maggie's estate also included Douglas Lake Farm, the rural property where she raised her children with her former husband, Robert Stephens. The compound featured barns, a stable, a vineyard and a five-bedroom home, where the star lived for four decades.
Her will, which she signed in September 1998, also addressed intellectual property connected to her family. The document outlined separate arrangements for copyrights, royalties and unpublished works she inherited. Maggie’s final wishes came years before the death of her playwright husband, Beverley Cross, who died in 1998.
The Downton Abbey actress ultimately died on September 27, 2024, at age 89. Her sons reflected on their mother’s final days in a statement to E! News, following her death.
"An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end," they said.
Toby Stephens Opened Up About His Mother’s Final Days
Maggie Smith’s family reflected on the beloved actress following her death at 89.
Two months after Maggie’s death, Toby spoke publicly about the loss and his mother’s declining health.
"She had been ill for a while and it was very hard to see that," the Black Sails star told ABC News in a December 2024 interview.
"But she was in her 90th year, she’d had a really good innings," he added.
The outpouring following Maggie's death also gave Toby a sense of her lasting impact.
"It’s been incredibly moving for my family to see how universally loved and admired she was," he said.
"She was just like all of us," Toby added.
He continued, "She didn’t have that self-confidence."

'Harry Potter' Costars Remembered Maggie Smith
Maggie Smith was remembered by 'Harry Potter' co-star Emma Watson as a 'true definition of greatness.'
Emma Watson, who played Hermione Granger alongside Maggie in the Harry Potter films, looked back on their time together.
"When I was younger I had no idea of Maggie’s legend—the woman I was fortunate enough to share space with," she wrote on an Instagram Story.
"It is only as I’ve become an adult that I’ve come to appreciate that I shared the screen with a true definition of greatness," she added.
Maggie Smith was remembered by 'Harry Potter' co-star Daniel Radcliffe, who first met her at the age of 9.
Daniel Radcliffe, who also worked with Maggie from a young age, recalled meeting the actress.
"The first time I met Maggie Smith I was 9 years old and we were reading through scenes for David Copperfield, which was my first job," he said.
"I knew virtually nothing about her other than that my parents were awestruck at the fact that I would be working with her. The other thing I knew about her was that she was a Dame, so the first thing I asked her when we met was 'would you like me to call you Dame?' at which she laughed and said something to the effect of 'don’t be ridiculous!'" he added.
