Wyle's struggles intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he found himself “profoundly depressed” amid Hollywood strikes in 2023. During this challenging time, he received messages from healthcare workers seeking representation in television, similar to what ER offered.

The actor’s career reset began when he landed the lead role in The Pitt.

Initially, Wyle collaborated with ER creators R. Scott Gemmill and John Wells, hoping to reboot the series. However, negotiations with Warner Bros. fell through.
