'RHOC' Alum Kelly Dodd Claims Andy Cohen Began Including MAGA Women on Bravo Because 'Ratings Were Slipping': 'He Lost Half His Audience'

Former Real Housewives of Orange County cast member Kelly Dodd strongly criticized executive producer Andy Cohen after he defended casting MAGA-supporting women.

During an August 2026 Q&A session on Threads, a fan complained about the high volume of MAGA women on the franchise, stating they could no longer watch RHOC.

Cohen responded, stating, "If we didn't showcase people with different POV's there would be no show. Also, it's a show about the women and their relationships, not about politics.”

Speaking with Fox News Digital, Dodd, who is married to right-wing Newsmax host and former Fox News senior correspondent Rick Leventhal, slammed Cohen's stance as disingenuous.

Dodd claimed Bravo does not actually care about showcasing diverse viewpoints.

"They're making excuses that they need points of view when I don't think that's true," she said. "He doesn't have different points of view. I think he's full of s---. I think that he sees that the ratings are slipping, and he needs to get back some conservative. He's lost half of his audience. Any time you talk, speak about politics. ... you're gonna p--- off half the country."

Dodd pointed out Cohen's history of criticizing conservative positions and alleged she was fired from RHOC in 2021 (and subsequently from her beverage endeavor) after making controversial remarks about the COVID-19 pandemic and Black Lives Matter movement, which she feels was political discrimination.

In a social media video, Dodd, who was also under fire for making transphobic comments, demanded a formal apology from Cohen, arguing that if Bravo now openly embraces MAGA viewpoints, she should not have been "canceled" and ousted for hers.

Bravo fired Dodd from The Real Housewives of Orange County in June 2021 following a series of highly publicized controversies during Season 15. Dodd faced severe backlash for minimizing the COVID-19 pandemic, calling it "God's way of thinning the herd" and falsely claiming no one was dying in Orange County.

During her bridal shower, she wore a hat that read "Drunk Wives Matter," which viewers widely criticized as mocking the Black Lives Matter movement.

At the Season 15 reunion, she claimed to be "Black" and argued with Cohen over her social media behavior, damaging her standing with network executives.

Cohen confronted Dodd directly over her harmful statements, noting her off-camera rhetoric about the pandemic and social movements crossed the line from standard reality television drama into a genuine public relations crisis that alienated half the audience.

Dodd maintains she was pushed out purely for her conservative political views rather than her behavioral controversies.

Dodd joins fellow RHOC housewife Vicki Gunvalson, a veteran of the franchise, as a MAGA housewife. Gunvalson, a staunch, traditional conservative, has faced fan backlash for MAGA-adjacent social media activity and supporting President Donald Trump.

Though previously perceived by fans as a Trump supporter, fellow OC housewife Emily Simpson explicitly denounces the MAGA movement. She clarified on social media that her values make her inherently "anti-MAGA.”

Following recent fan backlash over the casting of right-leaning women, OC veteran Tamra Judge took to Threads to declare explicitly to viewers: "This Housewife is not MAGA!"

Deep-dive media studies (such as those by YouGov) consistently show that reality television audiences lean disproportionately female and heavily Democratic or progressive.

Cohen has previously acknowledged that the audience is politically diverse.

Franchise demographics vary wildly by region: series like The Real Housewives of Atlanta and Potomac over-index with a highly liberal, racially diverse audience, while Orange County and New Jersey traditionally draw a much higher percentage of right-leaning and conservative viewers.
