Sam Hunt released his first new song on January 2 since he was arrested for a DUI in November 2019. The country singer croons about his “checkered past,” a seemingly nod to his run-in with the law.
Sam’s latest single, “Sinning With You” is about the singer falling for a good girl and tainting her reputation because of his own. “My past was checkered, your spotless record was probably in jeopardy / Your place or my place, his grace and your grace, felt like the same thing to me,” the 35-year-old sang in the chorus.
The country singer continued, “I never felt like I was sinning with you, always felt like I could talk to God in the morning / I knew that I would end up with you, always felt like I could talk to God in the morning. If it’s so wrong, why did it feel so right? / If it’s so wrong, why’d it never feel like sinning with you? / Sinning with you.”
Sam’s latest single comes a little over a month since he was arrested on November 21 in Nashville. Us Weekly confirmed that the singer was stopped at 6:30 a.m. after allegedly driving on the wrong side of the road and swerving in and out of the lane.
The “House Party” singer was charged with a DUI and having an open container in the car. According to documents obtained by Us, his blood alcohol content was .173 which is above Tennessee’s legal limit of .08.

Sam was released on a $2,500 bond and is expected to go to court on January 17 for his case.
The “Drinkin’ Too Much” singer tweeted an apology the following day for drinking and driving. “I decided to drive myself home after drinking at a friend’s show in downtown Nashville. It was a poor and selfish decision and I apologize to everyone who was unknowingly put at risk and let down by it. It won’t happen again,” he wrote.
A few weeks after his arrest, Sam went on to perform at New York’s Country 94.7’s Stars and Strings concert on December 4. He went on to tell his fans, “We’re finishing up a new album before January. We’re going to hit the road and tour next year. I didn’t do a lot of dates this year, but next year we’re hitting it hard!”
Sam also performed at the widely watched Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve at Times Square in New York City.
