President Donald Trump appeared to drift off to sleep for more than 20 seconds during an afternoon event in the Oval Office on Monday, August 31. The event was held to announce new pharmaceutical agreements aimed at lowering drug prices.
The 80-year-old president gathered Cabinet members, pharmaceutical executives and reporters inside the Oval Office.
Trump began visibly nodding off roughly 15 minutes into the hour-long session as Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. started praising his leadership.
Donald Trump Appears to Nod Off in Oval Office

Donald Trump propped himself up when Howard Lutnick began speaking.
“At one point, Trump’s eyelids appeared to wage a losing battle with drowsiness, fluttering open and shut. He eventually kept his eyes closed for more than 20 seconds, slumping forward before propping himself up again just in time to hear Howard Lutnick gush, ‘It’s all thanks to you, because nobody thought that this was possible,’” The Daily Beast noted.

Donald Trump claimed his eyes close because he's bored.
This follows an incident on August 11 in which video captured Trump's eyes closing and his head tilting down during a presentation by Kennedy Jr. regarding chronic disease initiatives.
The elderly POTUS also appeared to doze off when he was reunited with his wife, Melania, at a Rose Garden event at the White House recently.
Donald previously defended similar occurrences by claiming he was not sleeping but simply bored, or that cameras caught him in a "closed segment" of his blinking cycle.

Rep. Ted Lieu posted a video of the president appearing to doze off.
The White House has consistently dismissed these episodes, asserting that the president remains the most energetic president in history and listens attentively during meetings.
This latest incident occurred just one day after Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Congress he had never seen Donald asleep in meetings, which prompted Rep. Ted Lieu to counter by playing multiple clips of the president dozing off.
Lieu shared a video clip of Donald's latest public nap with Rubio online, simply writing, “cc: @MarcoRubio.”
Donald's daughter-in-law Lara recently remarked that the geriatric POTUS, who spends most of his nights posting on Truth Social, sleeps very little.
The President's Sleeping Habits Sparked Health Concerns

Rep. Yassamin Ansari said Donald Trump falling asleep during the day is a 'national security crisis.'
Following this latest event, lawmakers like Arizona Democrat Rep. Yassamin Ansari publicly declared the repeated daytime sleeping a "national security crisis" and renewed calls to invoke the 25th Amendment.
The POTUS has been observed or reported to have fallen asleep in public at least 30 to 40 times throughout his public life, including his criminal court trials, and especially frequently during his second presidential term.
Medical experts, including former vice-presidential cardiologist Dr. Jonathan Reiner, have publicly speculated that the president exhibits signs of "severe daytime somnolence.” This adds fuel to ongoing public debates over his cognitive stamina during his second term.
