Inside Assassination Attempts Against Donald Trump

Ryan Routh was sentenced to life in federal prison for attempting to kill Donald Trump in September 2024.
Trump infamously survived an assassination attempt in July 2024, when a bullet grazed his ear during a rally in Butler, Penn. The FBI identified Thomas Matthew Crooks as the shooter, who was killed by agents shortly after opening gunfire.
Another attempt was taken on the president's life just months later — with Ryan Routh sentenced to life in federal prison in February 2026 for attempting to assassinate Trump at his West Palm Beach golf course in Florida in September 2024.

Donald Trump said a bullet grazed his ear during a July 2024 assassination attempt.
Routh — who was spotted by Secret Service members while hiding in shrubbery surrounding the course with an AK-style rifle — received a guilty verdict on charges of attempting to kill a major presidential candidate.
At the time of the September 2024 assassination attempt, Trump released a statement via Truth Social, writing, "I would like to thank everyone for your concern and well wishes - It was certainly an interesting day! Most importantly, I want to thank the U.S. Secret Service, Sheriff Ric Bradshaw and his Office of brave and dedicated Patriots, and, all of Law Enforcement, for the incredible job done today at Trump International in keeping me, as the 45th President of the United States, and the Republican Nominee in the upcoming Presidential Election, SAFE. THE JOB DONE WAS ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING. I AM VERY PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!"
