At a recent political rally in Grand Island, Neb., President Donald Trump flashed the inside of his navy suit jacket to the crowd, revealing a tag from the affordable menswear retailer Jos. A. Bank.
The moment triggered significant online chatter after menswear writer and style critic Derek Guy highlighted that the brand's suits are primarily manufactured overseas in countries like China and Bangladesh.
“Interesting. Jos. A. Bank suits are all made overseas, typically in countries like China and Bangladesh,” wrote Guy, the editor of menswear blog, Put This On.
Donald Trump's Suit Fuels Debate

Critics pointed to the imported Jos. A. Bank suit as a contrast with Donald Trump’s America First platform and focus on domestic manufacturing.
Critics and commentators noted a sharp contrast between the foreign-sourced "cheap import" and Trump's nationalistic "America First" political platform, which heavily emphasizes domestic manufacturing, border protection and trade tariffs.
Financial filings show that Tailored Brands — the parent company of Jos. A. Bank — relies on a global supply network located primarily in Asian countries like China, Bangladesh, Vietnam, and Indonesia, with tags frequently displaying "Made in China" or similar labels to credit its origin.
While the retailer features an American-made associate line under the Joseph Abboud label, Trump's visible tag specifically identified the standard imported line.
Donald Trump Ditches Luxury Tailoring

Donald Trump previously favored Brioni and Martin Greenfield Clothiers before his recent appearance in a Jos. A. Bank suit.
For years, Trump was famously known for wearing luxury Italian suits from the high-end label Brioni, which supplied his wardrobe during his reality television show The Apprentice. He has also previously worn custom clothing from the New York-based Martin Greenfield Clothiers.
The switch represents a significant cost drop. Standard Jos. A. Bank suits typically retail between $250 and $580 (with sales starting as low as $149.99), compared to Brioni's luxury suits, which range from $5,500 to $16,200.
While Jos. A. Bank has an American-made associate label, Joseph Abboud, Trump’s tag clearly identified his suit as a Jos. A. Bank item.

Donald Trump's Suit Sparks Mockery

Critics and fashion commentators mocked Donald Trump’s Jos. A. Bank suit, with some questioning his choice to wear the more affordable brand.
“I wonder why Trump chose the cheap import over the US-made suit,” Guy wrote.
Many critics jokingly dubbed the downgrade the "biggest recession indicator of all time," laughing at the idea that even a billionaire is feeling the squeeze and shopping at the mall.
Other commentators noted that off-the-rack suits struggle to perfectly handle the heavy, extended shoulder padding Trump typically uses to create a structured silhouette.
Social media fashionistas also shared screenshots of him pulling the jacket back, with some mocking the stiff, robotic posture required to flash a suit label to photographers deliberately.
Donald Trump's Fashion History

Donald Trump's branded apparel previously faced scrutiny over overseas manufacturing in countries including China, Bangladesh and Indonesia.
This isn’t the first time Trump's threads have faced scrutiny.
During his previous campaigns and presidency, apparel lines carrying his name — such as the Donald J. Trump Signature Collection — faced similar critiques when it was revealed that his branded ties, shirts and accessories were manufactured in China, Bangladesh, Honduras and Indonesia.
The vast majority of apparel, shoes and accessories for the former Ivanka Trump Collection fashion brand were also manufactured overseas, with a large portion produced in China.
