Jon Stewart Says Donald Trump’s White House 'Perversion' Shows Surreal Corruption as Michelle Obama Reflects on Lost Opportunities

During an appearance on Michelle Obama's "IMO Podcast," The Daily Show host Jon Stewart reflected on the experience of watching Donald Trump's second presidency wash away what the Obamas achieved.

“I imagine for you and your family…that it’s a surreal experience for you guys because of the effort that you put into building something up and to watch it be corrupted,” Stewart said.

Stewart criticized the current administration, expressing, “To have this perversion of leadership, I imagine, is especially difficult to digest. There’s a surreal quality to it.”

In a lighter but pointed exchange, the comedian joked that the Obamas missed out on massive financial opportunities while in office.

Trump and his family made at least $2.2 billion in revenue during his first year back in the White House in 2025. This massive amount is more than triple his yearly earnings before returning to office. It is also nearly equal to all the money he made during his entire first four-year term.

He referenced Melania Trump's crypto ventures and quipped that Michelle could have launched a venture of her own.

“You guys didn’t do a pump-and-dump. Although I have to say, you guys left money on the table,” he quipped, referencing Melania's crypto cash grab, “a Michelle meme coin.”

Michelle agreed that she and former President Barack Obama never envisioned this explicitly corrupt version of the White House.

She playfully responded to the financial jokes, noting she "didn't even know it was possible" to monetize the presidency in that manner at the time.

“You know, we could have had a Netflix deal a decade ago,” Michelle quipped.

Jon agreed, saying that the Trumps' grifting has “perverted” the presidency, joking, “You could have had a weapons company! You could’ve sold missiles to yourself! Don and Eric have a drone company — I don’t even know what to say.”

“It’s the level of corruption that is, in some ways, maybe it’s doing a favor by making the current power structure and dynamic of this country untenable because of how explicitly corrupt,” he added.

Michelle also opened up about the heavy emotional toll of their eight years in office, revealing that she cried for 30 minutes after leaving Washington, D.C., in 2017 out of pure relief that her family had made it through safely.

“What we were saying about the rolling back of women’s rights," the mom-of-two spilled. "When things are OK, it is easier to take what you have for granted… and to think, ‘Well, you know, there will always be somebody there who wouldn’t possibly do this. We’ve never had somebody who would do this,’ and you just assume that’s going to be the way it is.”

Despite the damage Donald has done to the office, Michelle remains optimistic for the future.

“The kind of growth you would hope for, for the country, that each generation, everything gets better and better and better. And that was actually happening,” the ex-FLOTUS said. “Until we get to a point where there’s a generation that didn’t even remember what was wrong in the first place, never saw it.”

“I mean, you think about all the young people who only knew Barack Obama as their president,” she concluded. “That was their America. There is that truth too.”
