They make wedded bliss look easy, but Nick and Vanessa Lachey have had to work hard to keep their 10-year marriage strong.
“They’ve actually come close to the breaking point several times,” a source says of the couple, who opened up about their struggles on a recent episode of their new dating show, The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On. Vanessa, 41, “had a very tough time trusting Nick at first and used to go through his phone all the time,” the source spills. “He doesn’t like to admit it, but Nick was checking up on her too.”
Another problem for the duo, who hooked up soon after the 48-year-old former boy bander’s messy 2006 split from Jessica Simpson, was Vanessa’s anxiety about his A-list ex, the source adds.
“Jessica was this uber-famous star, and it was very intimidating for Vanessa,” explains the source. “It took a long time and a lot of support from Nick to put those feelings of insecurity behind her.”
Couples therapy has also been a lifesaver. “Nick and Vanessa started before they got married and never stopped,” shares the source. Escaping the Hollywood fishbowl for Hawaii, where they moved full-time last year with their kids, Camden, 9, Brooklyn, 7, and Phoenix, 5, has also strengthened their bond.
“When Vanessa started shooting NCIS: Hawai’i, she was planning to commute, but then they fell in love with the island life,” the source says. “It’s a much slower pace [than L.A.], and they’re the happiest they’ve ever been. They’ve had their bumps but refused to give up on each other. So now their life really is as perfect as it seems!”

The lovebirds got engaged in November 2010 and tied the knot eight months later. And while Nick and Vanessa have been together for a decade now, with them often showing off their idyllic life together with their kiddos, it seems they can't escape their past public romances.

Jessica recently touched on the former flames' MTV series, Newlyweds, which they filmed in the '00s. Noting she doesn't "regret" inviting cameras into their home and relationship, the songstress candidly admitted earlier this month: "If anything, it was great TV. It was very real, and Nick and I actually had a lot of fun."
Nevertheless, Jessica maintained she's done with reality TV. On the other hand, Nick and Vanessa appear to be thriving with their hit series Love Is Blind and The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On.
