Pink Suffered Near-Fatal Drug Overdose Before Signing Record Deal
Pink is not one to hide the secrets of her past.
During a candid sit-down with 60 Minutes on Sunday, October 22, the pop star, 44, opened up about suffering a nearly fatal overdose right before she got her life-changing LaFace Records deal in 1995.
"I had a chip on my shoulder," the "Raise Your Glass" vocalist explained of her traumatic upbringing in Doylestown, Pa. "Basically, I grew up in a house where every day, my parents were screaming at each other, throwing things. They hated each other. And then I got into drugs. I was selling drugs. And then I was kicked out of the house. I dropped out of high school. I was off the rails."
Pink's adolescence took a challenging turn after she took a lethal drug cocktail at a Thanksgiving rave. "I was on ecstasy, angel dust, crystal, all kinds of things. And then I was out. Done. Too Much," she recalled.
The "Try" singer admitted she almost lost her life that night, but luckily, a DJ at the event took care of her and made her promise to get back to her music and ditch the partying. "'Come back tomorrow, I'll give you a guest spotlight. But you can never touch drugs again,'" Pink recalled the man telling her.
Weeks later, the mother-of-two — who has been married to husband Carey Hart, with whom she shares children Willow, 12, and Jameson, 6, since 2006 — was signed as the lead singer of an R&B girl group with a big record company before eventually taking on a highly successful solo career.

"I never got a record deal because I was cute; I got a record deal because I was fiery, I had a lot to say, and I had a voice," she noted. "I'm relieved I don't have to fall back on conventional beauty and that doesn't have to be my thing and I don't have to keep that up, either, as I age. I don't have to be that. I can be all this."
Part of Pink's success has been how upfront she's been with her fans about her life and her struggles. "I guess I look at it in a very specific way," she admitted of why she doesn't shy away from being honest.

"If I'm a mystery to you, how can I expect you to connect with me? And if I'm a person that's desperate for connection, then why would mystery be interesting to me? I want to know you. I want you to know me," she said.
