Scott Jennings Calls Mitch McConnell a 'Fighter' as He's Cornered by CNN Costar Hunt Over His Calls With Ailing Senator: 'He Wants to Finish His Term'

CNN anchor Kasie Hunt cornered political commentator Scott Jennings on air after he claimed to have received multiple personal phone calls from Sen. Mitch McConnell, who has been absent from public view since June 14.

The tension peaked during heated broadcasts of The Arena with Kasie Hunt, where Jennings' ongoing assertions that he was speaking directly with the ailing Kentucky Senator were met with extreme skepticism by the panel.

The saga unfolded through a series of sharp exchanges across July and August.

On August 11, after Jennings doubled down and claimed that McConnell had "called me directly from his phone today," Hunt openly cornered him.

She asked point-blank: "Do you think he’d be willing to call into the show? Could we get him on the phone now?" Panelists noted that Jennings appeared visibly stunned — described by critics as a "deer in the headlights" moment — as he could not produce the Senator on demand.

On Wednesday, September 2, Hunt pressed Jennings again regarding the fact that McConnell has now been missing from the public eye for 80 days.

Jennings noticeably amended his previous tone, appearing far less optimistic about McConnell's immediate condition ahead of the Senate reconvening on September 14. "I haven't spoken to him for several days, just to be clear," Jennings admitted, backtracking on his previously frequent updates while shifting to a defense that McConnell is "a fighter" still recovering at home.

“I know he‘s at home. I know he‘s still doing his recovery. The Senate goes back in on the 14th of September. I know they're fighting to get him back to work. I know he wants to go back to work, and I know he wants to finish his term, and it's his intention to do so. But there‘s two weeks between now when the Senate goes back,” Jennings began. “The man‘s a fighter. Overcoming polio proves that, and so my thoughts and prayers are with him. I hope he comes back to work. And there‘s some big, big issues coming up later this fall.”

“When was the last time you were in contact with him?” Hunt asked.

“It‘s been several days. A couple of weeks,” Jennings replied. “I‘m trying to be precise. It‘s been — it‘s been a couple of weeks since I spoke to him."

“And you say that you think that he intends to finish out the term that he has?” Hunt asked.

“Of course,” Jennings answered, adding a qualifier. “His intention is to finish his term, as far as I know. And his intention is to hopefully go back to work, and as you pointed out, this is his last term. There‘s a Senate race in Kentucky this fall, and one way or the other, his term will end in January.”

Jennings also shifted his position by adding that McConnell needs to be more transparent, echoing what most lawmakers have been saying all summer.

“I think between now and the 14th, they need to tell the people of Kentucky his intentions on going back to the Senate floor. There‘s votes on the floor. There‘ll be votes in committee,” he said. “There‘s things coming up that are important to the people of Kentucky. So, yes, I think between now and the 14th, they need to make clear their intentions about what his capabilities are going to be when the Senate goes back into its session.”

CNN has explicitly distanced itself from Jennings' claims, stating that his updates do not constitute official network reporting.

While his office has explicitly refused to provide an official timeline, Republican leadership expects McConnell to return to the Senate on September 14, when Congress reconvenes from its summer recess
