Former Trump Staffer Warns Scott Jennings Not to Get 'Anywhere Near His Presidency' or He'll 'Ruin It' During Heated Iran War Debate

During a live broadcast of CNN NewsNight hosted by Abby Phillip, former Trump campaign official Caroline Sunshine sharply criticized conservative commentator Scott Jennings, stating she does not want him "anywhere near" Donald Trump's presidency because his foreign policy ideas would "ruin it.”

The heated exchange occurred on Thursday, August 27, during a debate regarding the war in Iran, which reached its six-month mark on Friday, August 28.

The segment began after Trump posted "mission accomplished" on Truth Social regarding the conflict.

Jennings echoed these claims, asserting that the United States had "won the war against Iran.”

Phillip pointed out that data on oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz did not support Jennings' claims of total control, and asked Sunshine whether Trump should be touting a completed war.

“Scott is trying to argue that Trump should go out there and tout a complete, finished war. Is that the right strategy?” Phillip asked Sunshine.

Sunshine supported Trump's "mission accomplished" framing because it signaled a desire for American troops to return home. She compared the situation to past administrations to strike directly at Jennings' political background.

Sunshine argued that history judges presidents by "how little they stay" in the Middle East, stating that George H.W. Bush was more successful than George W. Bush.

Calling Trump’s misguided “mission accomplished” statements “fantastic because we can go home,” Sunshine added, “History doesn’t judge American presidents and their success in the Middle East by how long they stay. It judges them by how little they stay there.”

Addressing Jennings directly — who previously served as a special assistant to George W. Bush — Sunshine said, “Which is why George H.W. Bush is more successful than George W. Bush, who you advised, which is why I don’t want you going anywhere near Donald Trump’s presidency to go ruin it with more of your Iraq 2005 talking points.”

Moments later, when Jennings argued that the U.S. would need to keep assets in the region for monitoring nuclear sites, Sunshine shut him down by asking, "Why? The president said we won," adding that Jennings was refusing to look her in the eye.

The spat carries extra weight, as Jennings is reportedly under consideration to replace Karoline Leavitt, who stepped down as White House press secretary on Thursday, August 27.

Fellow CNN commentator Bakari Sellers could be heard laughing in the background during the broadcast as Sunshine delivered the insult.
