During a heated panel discussion on CNN's NewsNight on Thursday, August 27, pro-MAGA pundit Caroline Sunshine openly accused conservative commentator Scott Jennings of lying about having phone conversations with the long-absent Sen. Mitch McConnell.
The confrontation erupted at the tail end of a segment debating the conflict in Iran and U.S. intelligence capabilities.
When Jennings asked Sunshine why she didn't believe the administration's Middle East envoys, Sunshine abruptly turned the focus to Jennings' own credibility.
'I Don't Believe You'
While on-air, Caroline Sunshine accused Scott Jennings of lying about his phone call with Mitch McConnell.
She specifically doubled down by doubting his claim of a previous 20-minute phone call with the ailing senator.
“I don’t believe you had a phone call with Mitch McConnell; I’ll tell you that,” Sunshine ripped. “I don’t believe you had a 20-minute phone call with Mitch McConnell, and I don’t think a lot of people do, either.”
Jennings dismissed her skepticism, firing back that she sounded like a "garden-variety conspiracy theorist." When Sunshine mockingly asked, "How is he? Have you talked with him lately?" Jennings firmly replied, "Yeah.”
What Happened to Mitch McConnell?
The jab came during the Thursday, August 27, episode of CNN's 'NewsNight.'
The public skepticism from Sunshine — a former Trump White House spokesperson — stems from a broader ongoing mystery surrounding the 84-year-old Kentucky Republican.
McConnell has not appeared publicly since being hospitalized in June 2026 following a fall and a subsequent bout of pneumonia.
Jennings, a longtime McConnell confidant, has repeatedly claimed to have spoken with the senator by phone during his recovery and predicted that McConnell will return to Washington when the Senate reconvenes on September 14.

Scott Jennings has refused to call or FaceTime Mitch McConnell live.
Jennings has faced intense scrutiny regarding these calls for weeks. In previous CNN appearances, hosts Kasie Hunt and guest Karen Finney both challenged Jennings to call or FaceTime McConnell live on-air to provide a "proof of life," which Jennings declined to do.
CNN previously issued a statement clarifying that Jennings' accounts reflect his personal experience and do not constitute official network reporting.
Fellow Kentucky Republicans expect McConnell to return to Capitol Hill in September for a critical vote on a new farm bill, despite remaining out of public view for over ten weeks following a severe health setback.
Mitch McConnell has not cast an in-person Senate vote since June.
On August 6, McConnell was reportedly released from an inpatient rehabilitation center.
He is allegedly continuing an intensive physical therapy regimen at his home, though no one has seen or heard from him despite Jennings’ claims.
McConnell’s team maintains that while he has not cast an in-person Senate vote since June 11, he remains in close contact with legislative staff and is working on Senate matters remotely.
