'An Extraordinary Man': 'Sound of Music' Actor Christopher Plummer Dead At 91

Sound of Music actor Christopher Plummer, who starred as Captain Georg von Trapp opposite film icon Julie Andrews' Maria, has died at 91 years old, Deadline reported on Friday, February 5.

“Chris was an extraordinary man who deeply loved and respected his profession with great old fashion manners, self deprecating humor and the music of words,” Lou Pitt, his longtime friend and manager of 46 years, said in a statement. “He was a National Treasure who deeply relished his Canadian roots. Through his art and humanity, he touched all of our hearts and his legendary life will endure for all generations to come. He will forever be with us.”

Plummer died at his home in Connecticut with his wife of 53 years, Elaine Taylor, by his side, ABC News confirmed.

The Hollywood legend is best known for his role in the 1965 musical, and he previously spoke about his bond with Andrews.

“I’m very fond of Julie,” he told NPR in 2009. “That’s the nicest thing that came out of that film for me. We have a true and great friendship. She’s an extraordinary woman, professional. I’m grateful to the film in many ways because it was such a success. It is not my favorite film, of course, because I do think it borders on mockishness.”

Plummer’s most recent endeavor was starring in Peacock’s series Departure

“When I was offered this, I was extremely pleased because he’s an interesting character. He doesn’t appear very often,” he told Fortune. “But the very fact that he is someone who seems to be not what people expect is interesting and fascinating.”

He added, “In the very beginning, television was slightly different from the movies — very slightly. If you just be as truthful as you possibly can, then it doesn’t matter what medium you’re shooting in — it’s the same for all mediums.”

Plummer is survived by his daughter, Amanda Plummer, and his wife.
