As we embark on yet another year of amazing music leading up to Sunday’s 2014 GRAMMY Awards, let’s take a look back at the best GRAMMYS telecast ever—the one that happened in 2000. 1999 was a major year for the MTV Video Music Awards, but the 2000 GRAMMYS summed up our middle school years pretty much perfectly. Let us count the ways, shall we?

Firstly, this was the show to which Jennifer Lopez wore the world’s first ever red carpet gown that plunged down to the belly button. Remember this?

It was also the year when a newbie Christina Aguilera won the Best New Artist Award in that sparkly butterfly dress. She was beyond shocked…maybe because she beat out Britney Spears for the award?

And speaking of Brit, the 2000 GRAMMYS was Ms. Spears’ first GRAMMYS performance ever, and also was a time when Britney didn’t lip-synch her entire set. Ah, memories.

In 2000, Santana won almost every single award of the night (and I’m also semi-exaggerating) with songs like “Smooth,” “Maria, Maria” and more. Basically, Santana was to the 2000 GRAMMYS as Adele was to 2012…)
