After struggling through health woes, addiction issues and a breakup, Matthew Perry's recently turned the corner.
A source tells OK! that the actor, 51, was "really down on himself" after he and talent agent Molly Hurwitz called it quits on their two-year romance in May, but that "the support of his friends and family has helped him rebuild his self-esteem."
In particular, Perry's Friends costars — with whom he's in touch constantly thanks to their upcoming HBO Max reunion special — have been there for him and allowed him to keep his chin up.
"He knows he wouldn't have been able to get through this year without his pals," says the source, noting that Courteney Cox checks in on him with frequent phone calls and texts. "It's been with their encouragement that he's started to get back out there. He's even had a few discreet casual dates lately."
The 17 Again star's also putting his health first by staying sober and avoiding tempting situations.
"Matt's been going in for regular checkups with his doctor and is looking better than ever," the source notes. "The strongest thing he drinks is coffee, though he does indulge in the occasional smoke. But everyone's really proud of the progress he's making."
To stay on the straight and narrow, the source says the actor's leaving Hollywood in favor of Ojai, Calif., where his father lives.
"It's one of Matt's favorite places in the world, and it's always been sort of a retreat for him, where he can relax away from the limelight," the source shares. "He's quietly looking for a house to buy near his dad's place. He'll still be close enough to L.A. for work, but this change will do him a world of good."
