HEALTHCNN Panel Erupts After MAGA Pundit Claims 'Sociopath' Dr. Anthony Fauci Belongs in a 'Mental Institution'
The committee was investigating the origins of COVID-19, federal funding of coronavirus research and Fauci's role in the government's pandemic response.

Former Trump White House staffer Caroline Sunshine sparked a fiery on-air clash on CNN NewsNight with Abby Phillip when she claimed that Dr. Anthony Fauci "should be in a mental institution" and labeled him a "DSM-5-level sociopath.”
The panel, which was discussing the Republican-led committee's recent decision to vote on holding Dr. Fauci in contempt of Congress, erupted into a heated shouting match on Thursday, August 6, after Sunshine attacked the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease.
The comments — prompted by a discussion surrounding the public release of Dr. Fauci's pandemic-era diary entries — immediately derailed the panel discussion.
Sunshine stated that the 85-year-old Dr. Fauci, credited with saving millions of lives in his storied five-decade-long career in public health, "should be in a mental institution" and explicitly called him a "textbook sociopath.”

The MAGA pundit called Dr. Fauci a 'sociopath.'
Panelist and author Leigh McGowan argued that Dr. Fauci was being unfairly blamed for President Donald Trump's decisions.
“Well, he started at the behest of the Trump administration; we should point that out,” she said. “He did not have the authority to do any of the things people are claiming he is responsible for. He didn’t shut down the country; Trump chose to. He didn’t shut down the schools. Trump did. He didn’t mandate masks. Trump did.”
McGowan added that the doctor was “being used as a scapegoat” and called revived fixation on him “a lawless political stunt.”
“You shouldn’t be tarring and feathering someone that has been in six administrations, who's doing nothing but being a devoted servant of our public health,” she said.
Sarah Matthews also jumped into the conversation.
Sunshine interjected, spewing, “Forget about prosecuting him; the guy should be in a mental institution! He’s a textbook sociopath. I mean, DSM 5 level sociopath running our pandemic response, low empathy, ability to inflict pain on innocents, narcissism.”
Phillip retorted, “What are you talking about? Are you suggesting that he should be in a mental institution for having an ego, which I think would characterize just about every single person in Washington?”
Former Trump White House Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Matthews jumped into the fray, saying, ”Caroline, I worked as Trump’s deputy press secretary during Covid so I actually worked – I will acknowledge, was it very frustrating working in the White House press office and him being on a magazine cover or doing an interview on TV where he’s talking ill about the White House and its Covid response? Yes, that was annoying.”

Dr. Anthony Fauci's pandemic-era diaries were recently made public.
"But the thing is, then trying to scapegoat him and say that it’s all his fault? We were dealing with a novel virus. This was a once-in-a-lifetime generational pandemic. And so we were all figuring it out as we went on," Matthews said.
Sunshine then pounced, “Not him, he was busy reading his own press clips!” to which Matthews replied, “And you don’t think that Donald Trump and all those other senators on the Hill are just as narcissistic? I mean, come on, those guys would slit someone’s throat to go on Fox News.”
On July 29, Dr. Fauci appeared under subpoena before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, chaired by Republican Sen. Rand Paul.
“Maybe he was drinking his own Kool-Aid, but you know who was pouring the Kool-Aid as well, Caroline? Donald Trump – let’s play the clips,” Phillip said, introducing clips of Trump praising the doctor in 2020 as “a major television star,” “so professional” and “talented.”
“Now, to be honest, I don’t care about any of that. I think it’s totally fair that Trump was praising him. I think it is a little embarrassing that he loved his press so much, but my question is, what is he being prosecuted for?” Phillips concluded.
If the DOJ surprisingly chooses to pursue the case and a court finds him guilty of the federal misdemeanor, contempt of Congress carries a penalty of up to one year in prison and a $100,000 fine. However, because Fauci exercised a standard constitutional defense and the full Senate did not authorize the referral, mainstream legal consensus labels the vote a symbolic political stunt with a very low probability of leading to criminal charges.
