Donald Trump's Border Czar Tom Homan Boasts About ICE Arrests Hitting Record High

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has reached record highs in arrests, according to announcements White House Border Czar Tom Homan made on Fox News. The surge follows a recent congressional budget package that fully funded the agency's interior enforcement operations.

ICE made roughly 51,000 arrests in July, the highest single-month total in the agency's history.

Enforcement operations averaged approximately 1,645 immigration arrests per day throughout July.

July's historic numbers broke the previous record set just one month prior in June, which saw 43,138 arrests.

In a single five-day stretch, ICE recorded over 10,000 arrests.

The active ICE detainee population has scaled to a record high of 73,000 individuals facing deportation.

Homan attributed the rapid acceleration in enforcement — which he termed "deportation-maxxing"— to several key structural developments, including the passage of a budget reconciliation package that replenished agency coffers with critical enforcement capital, the end of a record-long Department of Homeland Security shutdown that allowed agents to resume interior operations fully and thousands of newly hired ICE personnel who have officially entered active field deployment.

Homan reiterated that while "no one is off the table" if they are in the country illegally, the agency is actively prioritizing public safety threats, noting that approximately 60 percent of current detainees have existing criminal convictions or face pending criminal charges.

Homan’s 60 percent figure is highly contested and directly contradicted by nonpartisan tracking data, which indicates that the majority of ICE detainees actually have no criminal record. The dispute stems from a fundamental conflict between the official data released by the administration and independent analyses of ICE's internal databases.

The 60 percent figure heavily relies on individuals who have only been charged with an offense but have never been convicted in a court of law.

Comprehensive tracking by the nonpartisan Syracuse University Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) shows that 70.6 percent of ICE detainees have no criminal conviction. Only about 29.4 percent have a documented criminal conviction on their records.

Of the detainees who do have a criminal record, independent data shows that a vast percentage of the offenses are non-violent, minor infractions — most notably driving without a license or minor traffic violations.

Homan, President Donald Trump, and DHS have frequently stated in press briefings that detainees who lack a traditional criminal history are often cataloged as "national security threats" or "gang members.”

Critics point out that these designations are often applied internally by agents without formal court convictions, inflating the perceived "criminal" percentage of those in custody.
