Former President Joe Biden was not Jill Biden's type.
Jill gave rare insight into the beginning stages of her relationship with the former commander-in-chief on the Tuesday, September 1, episode of Jesse Tyler Ferguson's "Dinner's on Me" podcast.
The couple first crossed paths when she was just 23 years old and student teaching while attending the University of Delaware. Joe would have been in his early 30s at the time.
'He Might Be Interesting'

Jill Biden told Jesse Tyler Ferguson about her first encounter with Joe Biden.
"So can you imagine?" she began. "I mean, here I am, student teaching and going to the university. He calls me one Saturday and, you know, it was the '70s, and so most of the guys that I dated had long hair, clogs, bell-bottoms."
She admitted that the first time Joe called her up, she had another date she had to cancel after accepting her now-husband's offer. Even then, a young Jill "couldn't imagine" a real romance with Joe.
"I thought, 'Well, he might be interesting,'" she shared despite Joe being so different from her typical beau.
"So I open the door and I took one look at his perfect suit and his leather loafers, and I thought, 'Thank God, this is only one date,'" she recalled. "Because I just couldn't imagine connecting with him."

Jill Biden found Joe Biden 'interesting' and 'charming.'
Dating outside of her type turned out to be a successful experiment for Jill.
"We went out and he was really interesting and charming, as you probably know," she continued. "And I don't know, we started dating like right away."
Joe and Jill had both been married previously when they first met. Joe to Neila Hunter, who passed away in a tragic car crash in 1972 with their only daughter, Naomi.

'I Fell in Love With the Boys'

Joe Biden welcomed two sons in his first marriage.
The couple also shared sons Hunter and Beau, whom Jill gushed "quickly" became a part of their dates. (Beau passed away from cancer in 2015.)
"Joe's okay with my saying this, but I really fell in love with the boys first," she noted.
The former first lady married Bill Stevenson when she was only 18 years old. The couple split four years into their marriage and welcomed no children.

Jill and Joe Biden are parents to daughter Ashley.
Jill and Joe married in 1977, which she said was his sons' idea. She loved "the boys" so much that she felt she had to be completely sure about spending the rest of her life with Joe.
"They were the ones that went into Joe and said one morning when he was shaving, they said, 'Dad, we think we wanna marry Jill,'" she remembered.
"I loved them so much, I felt that our marriage had to work, no matter what. We could never get divorced," she added. "They had already lost one mother through death, and I could never hurt them by leaving, by divorcing Joe."
The couple went on to welcome one daughter together, Ashley.
