Jill Biden revealed her emotional conversations with Joe Biden after he decided to drop out of the 2024 presidential race.
Jill opened up about what the couple said behind closed doors on the August 26 episode of "The Jamie Kern Lima Show."
Joe, 83, announced that he would no longer be seeking re-election in July 2024, just a few months before election day. He was replaced as the Democratic Party's candidate by his vice president, Kamala Harris.

Jill Biden refused to give Joe Biden advice about dropping out of the race.
According to Jill, her husband asked her for advice before officially dropping from the race, but she refused to give him her insight.
"I said, ‘No.’ I said, ‘You make this decision yourself.’ I said, ‘Whatever decision is made, you have to be able to live with it the rest of your life,’" she explained. "And I said, ‘I am not gonna weigh in for or against.’ And I kept true to that."
The decision came after months of concerns about his health, poor performance in presidential debates and calls from both sides of the aisle for his retirement.
'Jilly, I Had No Choice'

Jill Biden explained that Joe Biden felt he had no choice but to drop out.
The former first lady checked on her husband after the bombshell announcement was made while the couple was tucking themselves into bed for the night.
"I can remember, you know, going upstairs that night and getting in bed. And I said, ‘Joe, you know, how are you doing?’" the 75-year-old reflected.
"And he grabbed my hand, and he said, ‘Jilly, I had no choice,’" she confessed.

Jill Biden watched as Joe Biden drafted his letter stepping down from the race.
Jill recalled the "surreal" moment she watched him draft the historical announcement, all the while Joe was negotiating for the release of an American journalist detained in Russia.
"And I thought... Look at the irony of this,” she noted. “He’s resigning from office because people don’t feel he can do the job. At the same moment, he’s arranging for the release of a hostage. He’s doing the job so well that he’s getting this hostage released."
Joe “saw the direction that things were going" within the Democratic Party and knew there were resounding calls for him to retire.
"It was his decision. I think people just put whatever twist on it that they want, and mostly it’s negative because it’s just human nature," his wife added.
'He Gave Up Everything'

Jill Biden called her husband's actions 'heroic.'
Jill also revealed that her husband didn't plan to campaign again in the first place but felt he had to due to the "historical context" of what was going on in the U.S. at the time and pressure following midterm elections.
“Everybody was coming to Joe and to me and saying, ‘He’s got to keep going. He’s got to keep going. He started to do so many things. We’ve got to persevere. We’ve got to move on. We’ve got to build on what we’ve already done,'" she shared
“I thought what he did was heroic,” Jill gushed. “I mean, he gave up everything.”
