The inclusion of President Donald Trump's name was apparently a major factor in the collapse of the Kennedy Center.

The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts was built in honor of the assassinated president and had been hosting theater, dance, ballet, musicals, orchestra, opera, comedy and jazz performances for decades.

For a long time, it had been one of the most prestigious and flourishing places for performers to showcase their talents. Ever since President Trump's direct intervention with the center, however, that scene seems to have changed drastically.

Donald Trump renaming the Kennedy Center after himself resulted in record deficits for the venue.

Documents obtained by The Washington Post show that adding Trump's name to the Kennedy Center's walls seemingly caused widespread discontent among its donors and negatively impacted ticket sales.

The financial situation plunged further when the Trump-allied board of trustees decided to rename the Kennedy Center as The Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts last December.

Per The Washington Post, the center’s financial records showed that the arena stood to fall at least $100 million short of its initial projected revenue target for the 2026 fiscal year.

Insider revealed that Kennedy Center took a massive financial hit when Trump takeover happened.

“The center took a huge hit when the takeover happened,” a source with inside knowledge of the center’s financial situation told the outlet.

“It was just an absolute fiscal cliff. Donors disappeared, ticket sales disappeared, artists disappeared — like it was doomsday,” they added.

The outlet also reported that the center originally budgeted around $220 million in revenue for the ongoing fiscal year. However, by late May, board officials predicted revenue would be closer to $124 million.

They reportedly cut expenses by almost a third, but even after those reductions, the center is expected to run a $23 million deficit.

Trump's name was scrapped from the center earlier this summer. However, the DOJ argued in June that the performing arts center stood to lose “hundreds of millions” in revenue and donations without the current president’s name attached to it.

Government lawyers also argued that the plan to rename the center should proceed, claiming that Trump “donated his time, energy and unparalleled construction talents” to renovate the venue.

They also alleged that removing his name from the Kennedy Center would cause it to fall into “financial ruin.”

Despite a federal judge ruling that Congress objected to the name change and made it “crystal clear” that the center “cannot bear any other formal name or public memorial” based on a “unilateral say-so,” the board of trustees came up with a legal workaround to put his name on the building without naming the center after him.

Kennedy Center's board of trustees are still determined to put Donald Trump's name on the building.

Per the new resolution, President Trump’s name will adorn the building as a tribute to his renovation efforts.

A new inscription will be added under the former president’s name, saying, “Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump.”

They also proposed to close the center for two years to move forward with the renovation work. However, the proposal remains tied up in litigation.

They also voted for the area where the Kennedy Center is located to be renamed as The Donald J. Trump Plaza.

DOJ argued that Kennedy Center's funds will 'dry up' without Donald Trump's name attached to it.

Newly filed court documents by the DOJ on Monday argued that the lack of appropriate recognition for President Trump for his work might result in “donors to flee, financial contributions to dry up, and structural rehabilitation to stop.”

“There will simply not be the expertise or funding necessary to rebuild and renovate this decimated structure,” they added.

They also stated that without the Trump administration’s intervention, the Kennedy Center is under threat to become a “financially insolvent facility, housed in a decrepit, dilapidated, crumbling building, that is bleeding hundreds of millions of dollars in losses, and continues to race toward physical and financial ruin.”
