Republican Senator Says He's Still in the Dark About Mitch McConnell's Health Issues

Alabama Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville publicly expressed frustration over the lack of transparency regarding Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell’s recent hospitalization and rehab stint.

Tuberville noted that rank-and-file Republicans have been left "in the dark," receiving no new details during closed-door GOP luncheons.

“He lives next door to me, but he’s still in the hospital, doing rehab,” Tuberville told journalist Nick Ballasy on Thursday, August 6 — hours before McConnell's announcement that he'd been released from rehab and would continue his recovery at home.

When asked, “Is that all you know?” Tuberville admitted: “I don’t know anything.”

He joined a chorus of MAGA allies and Democrats urging McConnell's team to release a video update to prove his condition and map out a timeline for his alleged return.

Tuberville explicitly called on leadership to act, stating, "Somebody needs to do something. Somebody needs to come out and put a little video out.”

Tuberville emphasized that McConnell's vote is critical to passing President Donald Trump's legislative agenda, noting that "the Democrats are not gonna give us any votes.”

The 84-year-old stalwart Republican remains physically away from the Senate since mid-June after suffering a fall that left him briefly unconscious, which was later complicated by a mild case of pneumonia.

While Tuberville has pressed for transparency, other Republican colleagues, such as Louisiana Republican Sen. John Kennedy, have pushed back, telling peers to "leave Mitch alone" and respect his privacy during his recovery.

Besides his appearance in two photos, McConnell has not been seen in public for 53 days, having last been spotted on June 14, when he was rushed to the hospital following a severe fall at his Washington, D.C. home.

Following weeks of total silence, McConnell's office released a photo on July 12, showing him smiling alongside his wife, Elaine Chao, while holding up the sports section of The Washington Post showcasing the date.

This sparked viral online speculation and conspiracy theories about the photo's authenticity.

On July 27, his office released a second photograph showing him with his wife, timed to a statement from the Office of the Attending Physician. The medical update confirmed he was in a rehabilitation facility and undergoing intensive physical therapy. At the time, he was "not yet medically cleared to leave.”

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) publicly stated that the written statements and photographs are insufficient, calling on McConnell to provide a transparent video update or participate in an interview to prove his fitness to serve.

McConnell notably missed Kentucky's iconic Fancy Farm picnic on August 1. His high-profile absence prompted attendees to chant "Where's Mitch?"
