Tyler Baltierra, a prominent figure from Teen Mom, recently shared insights into his relationship with his daughter Carly, who he and wife Catelynn Lowell placed for adoption.
In a candid conversation on the “Cake For Dinner” podcast, Baltierra, 34, opened up about the difficulties they face in maintaining contact with their daughter.
In his remarks, he stated, “As far as our relationship goes, we don’t really have one.” This admission highlights the emotional complexity surrounding his role as a birth parent.
Email Remains Their Only Connection
The ‘Teen Mom’ star said email remained his family’s only connection to Carly.
The only method of communication between Baltierra, Lowell, and Carly, now 16, is through an email account that they established. “I set up an email for her that me and Cate will write to, and that’s pretty much the only way we’re maintaining any kind of communication,” he explained.
Carly was adopted by Brandon and Teresa Davis shortly after her birth in 2009, during an episode of 16 & Pregnant. Initially, the adoption was open; however, it was closed in 2023, which limited contact for Baltierra and Lowell.
How Carly’s Closed Adoption Changed Their Relationship
Tyler Baltierra and Catelynn Lowell continued writing messages for Carly to read in the future.
Lowell recounted a conversation with the adoption counselor, where Brandon and Teresa expressed the need to restrict communication for their mental health. “Yeah, I had to block [Catelynn] for my mental health,” she reported. This statement illustrates the emotional strain that the adoption has placed on both families.
Baltierra shared their approach to emails, explaining, “We figured if we set up an email for her, and write to it, and one day if she ever wants it, we can give her the login, and she can kind of just go through the email herself.” This thoughtful gesture demonstrates their ongoing commitment to Carly, despite the challenges presented by the closed adoption.

Accepting an Uncertain Future as Birth Parents
The couple accepted that Carly may ultimately choose not to pursue a relationship with them.
He also acknowledged that it is ultimately up to Carly whether she wishes to continue a relationship with them. “Me and Cate accept the fact that she may get older and want nothing to do with us,” he stated. This acceptance highlights the deep love they hold for their daughter.
