Let's break down all of Taylor's relationship rumors. Who was the rumor about? Was it confirmed? When did it take place and, more importantly, did it result in a Taylor-penned song?!
Who? Joe Jonas.
Confirmed? Yes.
When? July 2008 to October 2008.
Ended well or not? Not really. Joe broke it off by phone in a call that she said was around “27 seconds.”
Did she sing about it? Yes. She wrote “Forever and Always” and “Last Kiss” about him. In fact the record company liked the latter song so much that they allowed her to record the song as a last-minute addition to her album, Fearless.
Further explained: As two celebrities who are constantly on the road one could see why the Jonas brother ended it by phone … but clearly Taylor did not appreciate the impersonal method of breaking things off.
Who? Lucas Till.
Confirmed? Yes.
When? March 2009 to April 2009.
Ended well or not? Yes. Both remain in touch to this day.
Did she sing about it? Yes. Reportedly “You Belong to Me” was about Lucas.
Further explained: Lucas and Taylor dated for just two months but never really got serious. Lucas said that he never moved out of the friend zone and that’s what kept the relationship from progressing. “I really just liked her as a friend. That’s the only reason that didn't work out,” he has said.
Who? Taylor Lautner.
Confirmed? Yes. Taylor Lautner met Taylor on the set of Valentine’s Day where they played boyfriend and girlfriend. The couple became known as Taylor Squared.
When? August 2009 to December 2009.
Ended well or not? Yes. The pair have been quite cordial to each other since.
Did she sing about it? Yup. “Back to September” was about the relationship and served as her apology.
Further explained: She has said that he was way more into her than she was into him. The Taylors were incredibly cute together but that is often not enough to sustain a relationship. Fans were crushed, but the pair ended amicably. She broke up with him and in “Back to December” she sang, “it turns out freedom ain’t nothing but missing you, wishing I’d realized what I had when you were mine.” Hear a tinge of regret?!
Who? John Mayer.
Confirmed? Yes. John, the notorious ladies’ man, used his charm to woo the singer.
When? December 2009 to February 2010.
Ended well or not? It did not end well — at all.
Did she sing about it? You bet she did. “Dear John” and “I Knew You Were Trouble” were written about Mayer.
Further explained: Taylor felt taken advantage of by John due to the fact that she was 19 and he was 32. Just look at the lyrics to “Dear John,” “don’t you think I was too young to be messed with. The girl in the dress cried the whole way home. I should’ve known.” John felt blindsided by the lyrics and her reaction to the breakup, telling Rolling Stone that “it made me feel terrible. I didn’t deserve it. I’m pretty good at taking accountability now, and I never did anything to deserve that. It was a really lousy thing for her to do.” See? It did not end well. But give the dude credit, John said he did like Taylor's Reputation album quite a bit!
Who? Cory Monteith.
Confirmed? No.
When? April 2010 to May 2010.
Ended well or not? Let’s just say things with Cory Monteith didn’t end badly ... no one is sure if it even started!
Did she sing about it? Supposedly “Mine” from Speak Now is about the former Glee star.
Further explained: Cory met Taylor through friends in Los Angeles, but it was never fully confirmed that they were a couple or even an item. The timing works as both were “available” during those two months but alas, nothing was ever written in stone.
Who? Jake Gyllenhaal.
Confirmed? Yes. Jake reportedly spent $160K to have Taylor flown on a private jet for a date. That certainly impressed her even though she has her own money.
When? October 2010 to January 2011.
Ended well or not? Not in the least. He broke up with her via text!
Did she sing about it? Oh you bet — quite a few times. “We Are Never Getting Back Together,” “State of Grace,” “The Last Time,” “All Too Well,” “Girl at Home” and “The Moment I Knew” are all about Jake. Much of her Red album is supposedly about the Oscar-nominated actor.
Further explained: It does not matter how busy you are — breaking up with someone via text is not cool, bro. Not cool at all! Even though it ended badly whenever the duo were snapped in public their smiles could have heated up the New York City winter. She was interviewed in USA Today soon after the breakup and admitted that he never seemed that into her and went so far as to say his interests outside of their relationship mattered more to him. “He made me feel like I wasn’t as good or as relevant as these hipster bands he listened to.” Ouch. Jake has his opinions on his relationship with Taylor too!
Who? Adam Young.
Confirmed? No. This firmly belongs in the rumor category. If there were any feelings, Adam Young was way more into her than she was into him.
When? June 2011.
Ended well or not? Supposedly never started.
Did she sing about it? Yes. “Enchanted” is about him.
Further explained: Adam, the Owl City singer, sang about Taylor and made it clear in interviews that he had a crush on her. She responded by singing an ode to him, “Love Story.” Upon hearing that she had a song about him on her album, Fearless, Adam rushed out to buy the record. "I bought her record at midnight when it came out. I was playing through it top to bottom. I love the classic adding up the letters in her lyrics. I got to that song and it added up to my name and I had to take a step back and decipher the code,” he said proudly. “We emailed back and forth for awhile and she made some comment that I used the word ‘enchanted’ in an email. She said how she had never heard anyone really use that word before. I was like, ‘This song has to be about me.’”
Who? Eddie Redmayne.
Want OK! each day? Sign up here!
Confirmed? No.
When? October 2011 to January 2012.
Ended well or not? Not sure.
Did she sing about it? No.
Further explained: Although the pair were supposedly seen together repeatedly during this period no one ever got a photo of Eddie Redmayne and Taylor, and there is no firm evidence that they were dating. The only two people who could confirm this relationship haven't spoken about it.
Who? Zac Efron.
Confirmed? No.
When? February 2012 to March 2012.
Ended well or not? Hard to say.
Did she sing about it? No.
Further explained: According to rumors Zac Efron and Taylor were supposedly hooking up while making The Lorax . It's an interesting rumor as voice actors for animated films (and television programs, for that matter) record their lines separately alone in a recording booth. There is no evidence that the two were an item beyond being super chummy on the red carpet for the Dr. Seuss movie premiere.
Who? Conor Kennedy.
Confirmed? Yes.
When? July 2012 to October 2012.
Ended well or not? Not bad as far as Taylor breakups go!
Did she sing about it? “Begin Again” is reportedly about him.
Further explained: Taylor and the son of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. made a cute couple to say the least. She was dating a Kennedy… come on! The singer was four years older than the Kennedy clan member, but that was not what broke them apart. Conor Kennedy was reportedly a little freaked out by her obsession with all things Kennedy. She even flirted with buying property near the Kennedy compound in Massachusetts. He was just looking for a good time and she was looking for “the one.” That also drove a wedge between them.
Who? Harry Styles.
Confirmed? Yes.
When: December 2012 to January 2013.
Ended well or not? Not the greatest.
Did she sing about it? “Style,” “Out of the Woods” and “I Knew You Were Trouble.”
Further explained: When a song features the lyrics “I knew you were trouble when you walked in” that relationship probably did not go very well. Although Harry Styles and Taylor made an attractive couple, their destiny lay elsewhere.
Who? Karlie Kloss.
Confirmed? No.
When? September 2014.
Ended well or not? Did it ever begin?
Did she sing about it? Nope.
Further explained: Taylor seemed frustrated by the rumors that she and her BFF Karlie Kloss dated. The singer issued a tweet denying the relationship. “As my 25th birthday present from the media, I'd like you to stop accusing all my friends of dating me #thirsty.”
Who? Calvin Harris.
Confirmed? Yes.
When? February 2015 to June 2016.
Ended well or not? No! It was probably her worst breakup of them all.
Did she sing about it? Yes in “I Did Something Bad.”
Further explained: Taylor and Calvin Harris dated for 15 months, an eternity for her! The adorable duo were introduced by fellow singer Ellie Goulding. Even though the relationship was among her longest it was also her most divisive split. He deleted all photos of her from his social media, and she promptly did the same. No one knows what exactly happened to get these two lovebirds from adoration to acrimony. She didn’t dwell on the loss long. Two weeks later she found…
Who? Tom Hiddleston.
Confirmed? Yes. The summer fling found the duo photographed together all over the place.
When: June 2016 to September 2016.
Ended well or not? Nope …
Did she sing about it? Yes in the track “Getaway Car.”
Further explained: When they broke up her camp accused the British star, known for playing Loki in The Avengers and Thor movies, of dating her for publicity. Tom felt the same way about Taylor. Either way it was a summer relationship and that’s all it was destined to be. Some have suggested that it was her relationship with Tom that broke her and Calvin up. After all she and Tom were seen dancing together at the Met Ball when she and Calvin were still together. Coincidence?
Who? Joe Alwyn.
Confirmed? Yes.
When? May 2017 to present.
Ended well or not? Still ongoing.
Did she sing about it? Yes. Joe Alwyn is the subject of her track “Delicate.”
Further explained: Taylor might have found “the one” in Joe. Then again, who knows? The British actor and Taylor have been dating exclusively since summer of 2017. Signs this might be serious include the fact that it was hush-hush at first. Given that most of her relationships wind up in the papers before she acknowledges them perhaps this one is different. Time will tell …
