The 48-year-old actress revealed the pain she endured after hubby Dwyane Wade fathered another child during her fertility struggles nearly a decade ago.
The basketball phenom welcomed now-7-year-old son Xavier with Basketball Wives star Aja Metoyer in 2013 when he and Union were on a little break.
“To say I was devastated is to pick a word on a low shelf for convenience. There are people — strangers who I will never meet — who have been upset that I have not previously talked about that trauma,” the Bring It On star wrote in her new memoir, You Got Anything Stronger?, which hit shelves earlier this week.
She continued: “I have not had words, and even after untold amounts of therapy I am not sure I have them now. But truth matters.”
When the retired Miami Heat player broke the news of little Xavier’s arrival, the duo — who got engaged in December 2013 after their brief split — were trying to have their own little one.
Union, who had been experiencing fertility struggles, was devastated when she found out. “The experience of Dwyane having a baby so easily — while I was unable to — left my soul not just broken into pieces, but shattered into fine dust scattering in the wind,” the Being Mary Jane star recalled. “We gathered what we could to slowly remake me into something new. There was no way to disguise where I’d been glued back together.”
The L.A.’s Finest alum's world crumbled as she failed to conceive, saying she remembered thinking, “This woman is such a failure. And she has the nerve to be old. And she has the nerve to have a younger husband. And she has the nerve to stick with a guy who had a kid with somebody else,” reported Buzzfeed. Union admitted that her “feelings weren’t originating from a healthy place” during that period.
Despite the minor bump in the road for the couple, they ultimately chose love and surrogacy as they tied the knot in 2014 and welcomed daughter Kaavia in 2018.
The She’s All That actress is also a stepmom to Wade’s three other children — two from his marriage to Siohvaughn Funches, and Xavier with Metoyer. The 39-year-old former athlete is also the guardian of his nephew, Dahveon Morris.
