Former First Lady Dr. Jill Biden opened up about the profound grief and feelings of betrayal she experienced when her son, Beau Biden, passed away from brain cancer in 2015.
During an August appearance on "The Jamie Kern Lima Show," she reflected on how she maintained unwavering hope until his final moments, admitting that she could not imagine God would take him.
The raw conversation highlighted her past struggles with faith, her family's enduring connection to Beau, and how she leans on his memory today while navigating former President Joe Biden's stage 4 cancer battle.
Jill Biden 'Never Gave Up Hope Until Beau Took His Last Breath'

'I really didn’t feel Beau was gonna die,' Jill Biden confessed of her son.
Dr. Biden confessed that during Beau's illness, she "never, ever gave up hope until Beau took his last breath.” Because she truly did not believe the 46-year-old would die, his passing left her feeling completely "betrayed" and unable to understand the loss.
"I really didn’t feel Beau was gonna die. I couldn’t imagine that God was gonna take him,” Jill said. “I never, ever gave up hope until Beau took his last breath, and so I just felt so betrayed by it, and I just could not, I couldn’t understand it.”
Elaborating on the painful period leading up to his death, she noted that she spent her time continuously praying and attempting to make deals, even asking God to "take me" instead of her son.
Jill Biden Recalls Sign She Saw After Beau's Memorial Service

Jill Biden asked God to 'take' her instead of her son.
Despite the devastating toll the loss took on her faith at the time, she and the former POTUS still feel Beau's presence daily.
She recalled a specific moment right after Beau's memorial service, when an eagle flew across the lake at their home, and said she chooses to believe in those meaningful signs in nature.
“The day that Beau died, we had a memorial service, and we got back to our house. We live on a man-made lake. And as we walked in, an eagle flew across the lake,” she said. “It’s those sorts of things. Whether they’re real or they’re not real, I do believe in that. I do see them in nature.”

“I think [Beau] listens, and now with Joe with his cancer diagnosis, I get a little frustrated, and I say, ‘Beau, where are you? I need you,’" the 75-year-old former FLOTUS said. “He’s with me every day even when I’m not thinking about him; he’s certainly part of my heart.”
