Kai Trump Reveals She and Cancer-Stricken Mom Vanessa Are 'Very Emotional' Ahead of Big College Move: 'We Both Started Crying'

President Donald Trump’s granddaughter Kai, and her mother, Vanessa Trump, are sharing an emotional milestone as Kai prepares to move away for her freshman year of college. The 19-year-old golfer is going to the University of Miami, which marks a major transition for the family amid Vanessa’s ongoing battle with cancer.

Kai revealed both she and Vanessa, 48, became incredibly tearful and emotional discussing the impending move.

"It's crazy how I'm leaving home now and leaving my friends and family. I'm going to miss my mom a lot. I think my mom is getting very emotional about it too. We were leaving a store the other day, and she just started crying in the car, and I started crying,” she spilled.

This transition marks the ubiquitous vlogger’s first extended period living away from her immediate family.

She will begin her freshman year as a D1 athlete playing for the Hurricanes women's golf team.

She openly admitted on Fox & Friends that she is nervous about starting college and navigating such a "scary" new chapter.

She noted that a major benefit of choosing Miami, Fla., is that she is only an hour and a half away from her home and siblings, emphasizing how much she loves her younger brothers and sister.

In a bedroom vlog filmed in her pajamas, she admitted to her subscribers that the thought of balancing high-stakes Division I athletic expectations with constant public scrutiny was weighing on her.

She emphasized her goal of maintaining a low-profile and keeping a "down-the-middle" stance, away from extreme left- or right-wing political drama on campus.

Vanessa, ex-wife of Donald Trump Jr., announced her b----- cancer diagnosis publicly on May 20.

She underwent surgery earlier in the summer and is currently moving into the second phase of her treatment plan.

At the 2026 ESPY Awards in July, Kai shared that her mother is "doing better" as she continues to heal.

Despite the high emotions of the transition, the family remains tightly knit, with Kai frequently praising her mother as the "strongest person I know.”

"She’s doing better. Obviously radiation takes a toll on your body, but she’s doing better and feeling better," shared the teenager. "She’s been a little tired, but yeah, she’s a fighter. If anyone could go through it, she’s a fighter... She'll be fine."
