Nick Reiner was accused of lying in wait before killing his parents with a knife.

Nick, 32, faces charges related to the fatal stabbing of Rob and Michele in their Brentwood home. The indictment, returned in July and unsealed on August 12, includes special circumstances alleging that Nick committed the murders by lying in wait and by use of a knife.

These allegations carry potential penalties of life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty, though prosecutors have yet to state whether they will seek capital punishment.

Rob and Michele Reiner were murdered in their Los Angeles home in December 2025.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman characterized the case as a "profound betrayal" given the accused’s relationship with the victims. He said, "The indictment unsealed today also adds a special circumstance allegation that the defendant committed the murders by means of lying in wait."

Hochman expressed hope that the indictment would move the case closer to trial and justice.

Nick has pleaded not guilty to both the initial and the recently unsealed charges. He remains in custody at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Twin Towers Correctional Facility without bail. A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for September, though no trial date has been set.

Nick Reiner is petitioning a California court to access an estimated $1.5 million held in a trust established by his parents.

Nick has reportedly spent approximately $200,000 on legal fees related to the criminal case and associated trust fund litigation. He is currently petitioning a California court to access an estimated $1.5 million held in a trust established by his parents. This trust dispute is separate from the criminal charges but directly impacts his ability to fund a private defense.

Nick’s attorney Alan Jackson, who briefly withdrew from representing him earlier this year citing circumstances beyond our control, has resumed efforts to secure his client’s access to the trust fund. At a court hearing on Monday, August 17, Jackson emphasized that Nick is entitled to his funds, calling the process a matter of rightful ownership.

The trust’s current trustee, Paul Kanin, argues that Nick consented to leaving funds in the trust beyond the age of 30 and that interest and income accrued should remain withheld.

Nick Reiner has reportedly already spent $200,000 on legal fees.

Nick disputes this claim, stating he never agreed to indefinite withholding, never authorized his mother to consent on his behalf and does not recall signing any such documents.

According to court documents obtained by Page Six, the trustee estimates that at least $558,000 became due to Nick when he turned 30 in 2023.

Nick’s legal team insists he should receive this amount plus accrued interest and income. The probate dispute centers on whether the trustee improperly withheld funds on concerns about Nick’s financial management capabilities.
