Barack Obama Mocks Donald Trump's Gold Oval Office Sign in Larry David Comedy: 'I Can't Believe I Didn't Think of That'

Former President Barack Obama sarcastically mocked President Donald Trump's gold Oval Office signage in newly released behind-the-scenes footage from the HBO sketch comedy miniseries Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness.

While touring a meticulous 2014 recreation of his former presidential workspace, Obama praised the crew's work before taking a sharp, humorous dig at the aesthetic upgrades his successor made.

As Obama walked around the set, he quipped, "I do want to point out — there's no gold sign on the outside that says 'Oval Office.' I can't believe I didn't think of that.”

The joke directly targets Trump, who had real-life gold ornamentation and custom plaques — written by himself — installed outside various White House rooms, including the Oval Office.

Aside from the political roast, Obama genuinely praised the production crew for details like the inclusion of his signature apple bowl.

“Nice job on the recreation,” the president tells the show’s crew. “You even have the apples,” he says, acknowledging the fruit bowl. “It’s fantastic.”

Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness is an HBO miniseries, a farcical fusion of American history and Curb Your Enthusiasm-style shenanigans, starring Larry David, with Barack and Michelle Obama serving as executive producers.

In the season finale, Obama guest-starred alongside David to poke fun at his own infamous 2014 "tan suit controversy.”

The segment showcased Obama's knack for ad-libbing, including a moment when he hilariously refused to let the Curb Your Enthusiasm comic curmudgeon drink from his smoothie straw to avoid getting "old lips" on his glass.

While the 44th POTUS typically refrains from political lowballing like his successor, he has been unusually vocal about Trump lately.

Speaking on the "All the Smoke" podcast, Obama challenged Trump's online bravado and insults after the Republican leader made hostile remarks at a G7 summit.

Obama dismissed the attacks, stating that during their rare physical meetings, Trump "doesn’t talk like that because he knows better," noting that digital culture shields public figures from the immediate consequences of their words.

In a June interview with the Today show, Obama formally questioned Trump’s flailing geopolitical strategy, stating that the conflict had cost billions, strained the military, and left the United States "worse off" than before the war began.

In February, Obama publicly addressed a widely criticized video posted by Trump, describing the loss of decorum and propriety as deeply troubling to the majority of the American people, and calling the behavior a "clown show" occurring on social media.
