Donald Trump Denies Endorsing J.D. Vance Ahead of 2028 Election: 'Way Too Early'

President Donald Trump publicly denied that his reported private comments to donors constitute an official endorsement of Vice President J.D. Vance for the 2028 presidential election.

When questioned by reporters in the Oval Office, Trump explicitly answered "No," clarifying that while he thinks Vance is "great," it is still "way too early even to be thinking about that.”

A report published by The Washington Post revealed that during a private Oval Office meeting with financial backers, Trump reportedly told donors, “At the end of the day, we need to elect J.D.”

Trump quickly downplayed the narrative to prevent it from being viewed as a formal clearing of the 2028 Republican primary field.

“No. It’s, uh — I heard about it a little while ago. I think he’s great, but we’re way too early to even be thinking about that. Okay?” the POTUS said when asked about the story.

Advisers and allies close to the administration cautioned that Trump frequently tells different things to different people and has not permanently settled on a singular successor.

Trump has publicly floated other possibilities for the 2028 ticket, previously musing about a potential formidable pairing between alleged rivals Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Turning succession talk into a theatrical event, Trump has actively polled crowd and dinner responses about the two men. He routinely praises Rubio's diplomatic capabilities and Vance's handling of aggressive media.

“They’re both very talented. They’re both great. Well, I like them both, and I like them together. You know, it would be great. I don’t know how you beat them if they’re together. That would be a great team. J.D. and Marco would be a great team,” he told the New York Post.

Insiders note that Trump prefers to keep his options open and maintain leverage over the party's future rather than lock in an endorsement years before the actual election cycle.

Others point out that the POTUS isn’t joking about running for a prohibitive third term.

“I’m going to do it again,” he insisted to the audience at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner redux. “It should be easy. I’m getting very good at running for president.”

When cornered on whether Vance is the official heir to the MAGA movement, Trump noted Vance is "most likely" favored as the VP, but immediately added, "I think Marco is also somebody that maybe would get together with JD in some form."

Rubio's team has downplayed the 2028 speculation, noting that a sitting Secretary of State faces immense legal and logistical hurdles when running for office.

Vance has consistently downplayed his 2028 presidential ambitions publicly, stating it is "premature" to focus on the next election and that he will not make a definitive decision until after the 2026 midterm election.

In a June interview with CBS Sunday Morning, the 41-year-old Veep revealed that he and his wife, Usha, will officially sit down to discuss a potential 2028 bid later this year, strictly after the midterms.

J.D. has emphasized that looking years ahead is a disservice to voters.

He stated on the New York Post's "Pod Force One" that his priority is securing wins for Trump's current agenda, adding, "If we do a good job, the politics will take care of itself.”
