Tomi Lahren Faces Backlash After Telling Gen Z to Stop Complaining Over the Affordability Crisis: 'Completely Out of Touch'

Fox News and OutKick podcaster Tomi Lahren faced widespread backlash from critics after posting a viral social media message mocking Gen Z’s complaints about the housing and affordability crisis while accusing them of overspending on daily luxuries.

Critics slammed the millennial MAGA host, 33, as "out of touch," noting that her multi-million-dollar net worth and rapid real estate success do not reflect the lived reality of young Americans.

On Wednesday, August 5, Lahren took to X to voice her opinion on the economic hardships faced by younger generations. Her post divided the issue into two opposing points.

While she acknowledged the ongoing inflation crisis, critics focused heavily on her decision to blame personal spending habits — like buying iced coffee and trendy athletic wear — for structural macroeconomic problems.

“Two things can be true at once,” Lahren wrote. “1) Things are way too expensive right now. Food, gas, groceries- all high.”

She added, “2) The Gen Zers b------- about it all also get a daily iced coffee, wear Alo apparel, and don’t know what it means to live within their means.”

Severe housing unaffordability forces young adults to spend over 50 percent of their income on rent, while high interest rates and mortgage rates make down payments virtually impossible for average earners.

Commentators, politicians and social media users immediately pushed back against Lahren's remarks, citing several hypocrisies.

Detractors pointed out that Lahren reportedly boasts a multi-million-dollar fortune and bought her first home for $700,000 at just 27 years old. She is also married to former Major League Baseball player J.P. Arencibia, who earned up to $1.8 million annually during his career.

Political commentators note that blaming paycheck-to-paycheck Gen Z workers for purchasing small daily treats ignores the fact that average wages have not kept pace with skyrocketing rents, corporate price gouging or mortgage rates.

“Tomi and her husband’s net worth is north of $10 million,” reported former President Barack Obama staffer Christopher Hale via X. “I’m sure blaming Gen Z kids living paycheck to paycheck for overspending on Chipotle will be a winning message in November.”

Many online users mocked Lahren for recycling old millennial-bashing economic tropes to target the next generation. Other millennials stood up for Gen Z, noting that older generations subjected them to the same unfair scrutiny during past financial recessions.

“Cutting a $7 coffee doesn’t magically create affordable housing, livable wages or solve other structural cost issues Republicans continue to ignore,” an X critic noted. “You’re confusing small lifestyle choices with massive economic barriers.”

“You really think the other generations aren’t affected by high prices?” added another. “You think those of us who should be eyeing retirement but are now increasing our workload to survive at 50 years old aren’t affected? Like everyone else, you’re completely out of touch with reality.”

The online backlash arrived at a tense moment for Lahren's political party. Just days before her social media dispute, Lahren ironically warned Republicans on Fox News’ The Big Weekend Show that the GOP is in severe danger of losing young male voters in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections if they fail to deliver on affordability and high-paying jobs actively.
