Nancy Guthrie Case: Renowned Criminal Psychologist From O.J. Simpson Investigation Points to 'Simple' Explanation Behind Her Disappearance

Forensic psychologist Dr. Kris Mohandie — known for his role in helping convince O.J. Simpson to surrender — expressed skepticism regarding the authenticity of the ransom notes in the Nancy Guthrie disappearance, suggesting the incident may actually stem from a robbery gone wrong rather than a planned kidnapping.

Nancy, the 84-year-old mother of Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, went missing on February 1.

“Unfortunately, I think this case is a simple matter of a burglary gone wrong and then attempts to cover things up,” he told Fox News Digital.

Dr. Mohandie, who helped negotiate Simpson's surrender during the infamous 1994 white Ford Bronco chase by appealing to his ego, pointed to creepy doorbell camera footage showing a masked man at Nancy’s front door on the night she vanished, suggesting an intruder targeted her.

He also cast severe doubt on the legitimacy of two ransom notes recently released by the Pima County Sheriff's Department, noting linguistic inconsistencies, such as shifting between "I" and "we.”

He explicitly stated, "I don't think the ransom note is legit," and he does not believe a follow-up letter sent days later is genuine.

“There are a lot of things wrong with that ransom note, and it raised a lot of questions for me of veracity," he said.

The inclusion of specific details in the notes — like Nancy’s Apple Watch and a broken floodlight — is not definitive proof for Dr. Mohandie.

He explained that these details could have inadvertently leaked to an outsider and do not represent information that only the perpetrator would know.

“I don’t make much out of those two details,” Dr. Mohandie said. “They seem to be details that inadvertently could have gotten to somebody, and so that’s not enough for me to say, this is something only the killer would know.”

Despite his skepticism, the criminal psychologist supported law enforcement's decision to release the letters, as doing so can spark public interest and generate new leads.

“A good investigation keeps an open mind,” he said. “It really does.”

Forensic teams are currently analyzing biological material recovered from a vehicle linked to the family, alongside a meticulous, minute-by-minute review of surveillance footage tracking that vehicle's movements around the time of the disappearance.

No suspects have been formally named or charged in connection with this vehicle data.

Separately, advanced DNA profiling is being performed on a hair sample and a glove recovered near the crime scene.
